Live e-tag testing to start this week in Gauteng

Wonder how long till somebody cracks the device so it beeps, but does not take $$$ off your account

Actually I assume they take a photo and they register the tag and somehow attempt to reconcile the two (in all likelihood culminating in the mother of all f**kups!) - yeah, get a tag and pay twice!

Will be 2 way communication. If the gantry doesn't get a valid reply from the tag it'll probably switch to number plate capturing.

Feel very sorry for the SANRAL call centre operators... ok no I don't... hehe!

"If more than one beep, or no beep at all was heard when passing beneath a gantry, motorists should contact the e-toll call centre on 0800-726-725, or visit an e-toll customer service outlet."

The pure nerve of this. Wow, I'm actually pissing myself with laughter.
No amount of twisted imagination can make this stuff up, you need the ANC for this.

heheheh +100

It is 2-way comms
There is memory in the tag- my suspicion it will be used to store speeding fine info
The system can also change the frequency of the beeps OTA, in other words they can set up the beep tone when you drive past a gantry. The tag has a 3DES encryption engine inside, it encrypts/decrypts data and sends something back... not sure what yet... still busy

Lots of info on Kapsch Trafficom's website. Google is your friend

Exactly. I'm guessing it'll probably generate some kind of key based on an algorithm that includes maybe the time, gantry ID, frequency etc. to allow them to link back to the transaction that gets generated. All in all I'm sure the whole thing will be quite bulletproof (remember, the ANC had nothing to do with the design of the system :D)

I'm also guessing those tags are active RFID's?
Passive will be too weak and would need a massive coil on those Gantries to generate enough electromagnetic energy to get a powerful enough response given the distance, speed and fact that they're enclosed in a vehicle.

Anyone who has a tag should post some pics, would like to see what they look like.

EDIT: Is this the one?

That looks roughly like the unit, unless I'm mistaken. From the spec sheet you linked to, the unit has a 3V Lithium battery with roughly 14 000 transaction lifespan.

No visual indicator in addition to the beeps? How would a hearing-impaired person or a motorbike rider for example hear the beeps and know whether he paid or not?

To be honest I don't hear my phone ringing in the car half the time 'cos I love my music louder than average and I usually sing along at the top of my voice. I'm like that.

Sanral is obviously discriminating can I smell a lawsuit coming on?

Two beeps or not two beeps , that is the question.

Lmao I like how they keep on feeding info to the media to maybe somehow get us used to the idea that its going to happen, twice a week theres something new announced about tolling....well guess what?

GET IT INTO YOUR THICK HEADS GOVERNMENT AND SANRAL.WE ARE NOT GOING TO STAND FOR THIS DAYLIGHT ROBBERY,E TOLLS ARE GOING DOWN, BEST YOU ACCEPT IT NOW RATHER THAN HAVE FALSE HOPE OF IT WORKING!

Seriously they should start an investigation into who exactly authorized this and how much they were paid to fast track it to materialize.Heads have to roll and then they can start talking about other means of paying for this but no tax money should be spent on this UNTIL the culprits responsible are nabbed.

If the legal route doesn't stop this well then the government is in for a rude surprise, this will probably be the biggest uprising since the apartheid days coming soon to a toll gantry near you!

That's why they keep hiking the petrol price - so we can't afford to torch them!

A bakkie with a small EMP gun in the back, pointing up, might help with the electronics in the toll gantries!

I drive a convertible.
The urge to buy a decent paintball gun and do some Saturday morning highway cruising is almost palpable.
Who's driving shotgun?

Whos driving with a shotgun ? Just think how many sensors you can take out at once ...
