Load Shedding - the all in one thread

We are running generators in 2 of our 3 buildings. So, it's going ok.
 
My question relates to the timing of these power cuts. Eskom has repeatedly said (and I can believe it) that peak usage is reached during the day and is caused mainly by industrial and commercial use. Why then do purely residential suburbs (e.g. Ferndale in Randburg) get hit after 17:00 (for 6 hours last night) when national demand has already subsided? There should be loads of capacity to go around when businesses and factories have closed.

I smell a rat. We're not being told the whole truth. If they were running short of fuel rather than generating capacity then it would make sense. What's the real story?
 
We've got an UPS with enough juice to safely shut down all our servers and then we just sit and wait it out.

damagement will have to buy a genny soon, they're losing out on salaries and downtime.
 
I've heard about some kind of battery unit that costs about R15k that should be able to run lights and pcs and the likes for a few hours in a small office / home.

Anybody know anything further? I've googled it but I dont seem to be winning *glare at timgaul*

Its not always load shedding.
They run the power stations above the recommended level - and then, the thing breaks.
So, it takes a few hours to fix again.
Or, it simply runs out of fuel, and the delivery takes a while - especially with traffic backed up due to the power failure.... :D
 
I am also currently sourcing a gennie, had the electrical guy come to the office and take a reading of how much amps we are pulling with only the pcs and lights running. AC off. Currently using about 18 - 20 amps .

So we need a about a 5 - 6 kva silent type gennie to put on the stoep, we are on the third floor so.

Then I am getting a couple of ups to run the pcs and routers so the whole network will still be up and running while we flick the switch on the db board and feed power from the gennie back into the lines.

And also we usually get to go home or go drinking in the middle of the day.

We are upgrading our gennie to a bigger one with autostart.

Perhaps its time to protest with a "tools down".
Everyone - especially top dogs at big companys - dont go work for a week.

Give the guavamint a wake up.
 
We're looking into getting a gennie for Head Office and a couple of 3kva's for the servers.

A friend of mine makes upto 300k a day at his franchise, so now he has no electricity and turning customers away!! That must be k@k!!

Eskom is no liable to the public and smaller companies. Save for the "essential" companies, you cant take action to them. This is why we get load shed, those "essential" companies get the power over the rest.
