i have been running my 1000VA APC on 2x105aH truck batteries for 2 years now, i have installed an external voltmetre to the batteries and after loadshedding the batteries are sitting at 25.1v and then the UPS starts charging the batteries again. Takes about 2 hrs or bit less to get back to the 27.4 volts
 
1500 on my TV for a new power supply...

all i'm saying is that it's a bit of a risk as it's being used outside the design parameters, with high chance of having a very heavy paperweight.
i guess it doesn't hurt to try if you got the ups already, if it does pop, you still have the batteries.

totally agree 100%
a UPS charger was never designed to run for so long, hence it gets warm, very warm and you risk the unit overheating and frying

Both got busted thanks to the last 2 months of unpredictable loadshedding.

I see the max rating of those units are 375w but they do not recommend using it on other equipment.

I wonder why not and whether this would be a good idea to hook up to your TV/HT area provided you are under the rated wattage?

Theres a different one for TV/HiFi's, but what the different is I'm not sure. Hirches was the cheapest
 
I haven't lost anything to load shedding yet, but last Saturday my 55" Samsung TV showed all channels in cartoon-like colors.
Frustrated I went to make coffee but my Delonghi machine's little screen was all lit up, like no text was showing, it still made my coffee when I pressed the button tho.
My computer worked fine, so I played a bit of games, then off to bed thinking it's going to be a costly month having to replace appliances.

Next day everything was back to normal, and still is. Could it have been a brown-out, like Eskom didn't deliver the full 220V or something?
Either way, I'm just glad I didn't have to replace anything after all.

Last night tho, I was at the computer again when the lightning struck so close I could smell the ozone, the crack was so loud both my Dachshunds came running wanting to be picked up.
I almost shat myself, like I was ready to dive for cover, but the moral of the story is.. they are coming for my appliances!!
 
Zero damage.

When there is LS scheduled, I turn all my power off at the breakers on my DB board either when I leave the house or just before shedding if I am at home.

I wait about 15 minutes after LS has finished and turn everything back on...

Simple really...

I was about to get some, till I saw the rated wattage. Even my small fridge pulls more than that during peak, when the compressor kicks in? Are they made for bar fridges or something?
 
R999 - Ubiquiti Router for my home network

It was hooked up to my old UPS, but it still got rekt. Now have a new UPS.
 
Touch wood, nothing so far due to load shedding but a deep-freeze due to lightning on 23 Jan.
Unfortunately no controller cards and temperature sensors available any more as the model is out of production long ago.
Have fridge and TV safe on my plugs.

No damage for many years. But then I have implemented proper earthing and good surge protection plus contactors that drop out that need to be manually reset more than 30 years ago.
These days there al all sorts of decent automatic over and under voltage contactors and other devices available to eliminate the manual part. Just stop buying that online rubbish and go to a reputable place like Clearline.
 
No equipment damage, but two rather awkward incidents in the last 12 hours:
1. Visitor to our block managed to reverse into the gate at 10pm when load shedding kicked in and everything went dark.
2. Resident in our block stuck in the lift when power went off at 7am (fortunately only a limited slot until 8.15am).

Do people not have Eskomsepush? Actually don't answer that looking at Twitter it seems that many South Africans still don't know how load shedding works.
