What/where are they? I don't nessesarily mean local music, I mean local stores. I must also clarify I don't mean cloud or streaming, I mean actually buying i.e. downloading.

Google seems confused and keeps giving me international one's.

I know Apple has a "sort-of" local store but I despise their formats.

No problem with the apple store.
You can just convert to MP3 in itunes itself.

In terms of quality iTunes seems to win over Google Music, and it randomly gives lossless downloads while GM is obsessed with streaming and mobile devices... Still don't like the need to conert though, there is always a slight loss.

Doesn't make sense. Just buy from play music then so you don't have to convert it.

You missed the audiophile part.... even WITH the slight conversion loss iTunes still generally has better quality than play music unless they changed their streaming over-focus recently and play music has NO lossless downloads at all.

iTunes aswell it's all lossy. The quality/size difference between m4a and mp3 will be marginal aswell and mp3 is supported on all devices under the sun.

Nope there are a few lossless albums, it's just not common and left up to the source how high the quality is.

Why does it have to be local?

I use bandcamp.com exclusively currently,
it is by far the best experience that I've had with buying music.

I can stream full albums without having to buy it, then when I do decide
to buy, I can stream anytime through the web or their app, and I can download the albums
in various formats.
example of an album i bought:

Is also has a great "Discover" feature, which as the name suggests
lets you discover new artists.

And it will show on the albums pages what people bought an album,
and you can browse their collections, follow them for future updates, etc..

I can't comment on the range of all music genres, but for my style I can find any artist which
does not exist on itunes/google play.

and loads of other features, https://bandcamp.com/fans

Because you are also buying directly from artist/labels you get really good prices.
some albums are even sold as "Name your Price"
