Local spammers named and shamed

Last week I heard on "The Internet Economy" (Reuben Goldberg on Classic FM on Friday nights) (somewhere well into the podcast on http://www.classicfm.co.za/talk/the-internet-economy/base_view?b_start:int=0&-C=) about a company that was trying to take a local spammer to court for not actioning the unsubscribe request. They had been trying for two years due to lack of adequate support from local prosecuting system. If they succeed it will be a great precedent!
 
HP also bombards me mercilessly every Friday afternoon - SMS and e-mail and often repeated and even after an attempt to unsubscribe
 
Pray tell what difference is it going to make to their spamming habits if you name and shame them??? No, no, wait let me tell you ...fkl that's what, well done!!

Seriously though, I don't think it is enough to name and shame!

Also, I have found several suppliers, banks, etc giving out my particulars. I picked out MFC for that not too long ago. They told me I agreed to it n one of the forms I signed. I read every document I am asked to sign ... no matter how long it takes :cool: and if they try to stick it in then I take them to task!

You have to watch the banks like hawks. ABSA signed me up in THREE different places on the form despite the fact that I said NO NO NO.

... of course, he's on the other side of the screen so you can't see what he's clicking!

add the Post Office, ABSA and SAA to the address reseller list, I've got email aliases for every company I deal with and wouldn't you guess, I get emails addressed to the custom address I use for each of these.

SA has quite low levels of locally-originated spam. ISPA's objective with the Hall of Shame is to educate, and in that way nip it in the bud before it grows. There's always a new marketing assistant who thinks it would be a good idea to send emails to a zillion people ...

You're right, it makes no difference at all to the inveterate spammers. However, ISPA finds that at least one offender named each time realises that what they have been doing is inappropriate, apologises, and signs an undertaking not to do it again. Repeat offenders are listed for 3 years.

If you're a MTA Administrator, you are welcome to make use of the list to block all mail from the listed sources. That definately puts a crimp in their business.

If you're not an admin, you are encouraged to educate those around you NEVER to respond to spam messages. Get your Viagra another way ;-)
 
I agree with Wimbo – naming and shaming local spammers is a positive development and will not only make some guys think twice before spamming but also make some of the current spammers realize that it is simply not cool to do it.

ISPA cannot do anything about the fact that the law on spam in SA is badly broken (they did try) - i am surprised you manage to type while sitting on your hands :rolleyes:

I have a silly question. Does anybody from Hetzner actually hang around on this forum. The reason I ask is I would like to know their policy on SPAM. I am always getting bombarded with SPAM from servers they host. They offer a anti-spam service for incoming email can they not use the same policies for outgoing email?

I would really hate to just block all their IPs on all the email servers I administer but I am getting desperate.
