Long Range WIFI

Good Day

I was wondering how far a WIFI signal can travel. I live 600m away (in a Straight Line) from my parents house. They have 40mbps Fibre and I was wondering if I could just set a long range wifi extender like :

The alternative is to set up like a antenna in each house that will transmit the signal from my parents house to my house. But I don't know of any options like that.

Then the other worry is if the signal will be strong enough or if there will be a drop in signal every now and then.

Please assist

Whatever you get, you will need two of it. Two nanobeams should sort you out

Remember you need some sort of licensing when purposefully broadcasting signal beyond the border of your property. Don't seek too much attention here...
 
2 Ubiquity Nanostations although 600 meter is a stretch perhaps the air fiber

Although this is a valid point, I cant forsee the SAPS knocking on your door: "Excuse sir, we have been tracing your "Mau9210" Wifi connection and it seems like you are trespassing the borders of your property, and although its for non commercial use we need to arrest you"
 
The airfibre might be overkill as it can go 25km+ and he only needs 600m. If you have line of sight of your parents place, just get a simple directional antennae and point it at your parents place, perhaps an antennae from their premises to you to boost the signal even further. 600m is really short in terms of distance.
 
Two Nanostations or two Mikrotik SXT units will be fine, they can do a few km's so 600m is nothing.
 
I've got two PowerBeam M2-400 units for a 650m link, trough some treetops as well, and they work like magic.
 
Stick with 5 Ghz if you got clean line of sight. Nano's will work fine.

And yes you do not licensing if you cross any public road, the SAPS won't knock on your door, but if someone complains at ICASA you can potentially get into trouble.

Why should there be any trouble with ICASA?
He is not looking to re-sell the bandwith, so no problem.

By Law you are not allowed to cross any public road. You can apply for an exemption, but without it - it's illegal technically. I'm not the ICASA police so just stating the facts, doesn't concern me.

It is bad that it's unregulated until someone really b1tches, some of us have licenses. Others mess around and broadcast full blast on 40 Mhz channel widths and feed various friends messing up the available ISM band for legal users. Fair? No :confused: Life isn't fair :p

No, that law was scrapped in 2005.

As for spectrum usage, that is another story Not much the law can do for you, unless you use channels not legal in South Africa, and even then, not much recourse.

Jip, that law was scrapped ages ago!!!

You have the open band which anybody can use, from there the term "open".
If you have a license from ICASA, do you not get your own freq band that is outside the "open" band, or is that a complete different story?

He may be talking about the type of license required to operate a WISP, or any other for-profit network. That still won't help you when it comes to frequency usage.
 
Uh .... quick question.

I presume its mounted on a wall. One at each end of the transmitting / receiving properties? Or is there just one at the receiving end?
