I used to use Delphi. Good IDE once augmented by some add-ins. But I'm not keen to mess around with it any longer.

I'm looking for a new, good, free IDE (that runs on Winderz) ... and obviously a language that is not Pascal. Could do Java, C#, C++ perhaps, and I have some experience of Perl and PHP. I'd like to learn one IDE and be able to try out several languages.

I'm looking at Eclipse - which seems to have modules for just about every language - and Netbeans - which if I understand right is focused on Java but has some other abilities. The Visual Studio Express offerings look interesting too.

Anyone care to recommend some favourites?

Just downloaded the Visual Studio Express stuff a few days ago (all free) and am liking it so far. The current 2008 version seems much more stable than the last version I tried.

Eclipse is good (JAVA).

Netbeans has the Mattise gui builder which is a major plus for App development

+1 for Eclipse.

Plug-ins for absolutely everything you can imagine, even Ruby on Rails and the like.
