Hi

I am looking for some insight into issues I have been having.

First some background info...
I have an Afrihost 10 mbps uncapped account since July 2012. Since then I have had a more or less constant download speed of 8.50 mbps 24/7 (saix.net speed test) and my line has been syncing at 10 mbps.
Even on torrents I get over 900 KB/sec.

About 2 weeks ago I started experiencing extremely slow and drastically fluctuating speeds from 0.95 mbps to 3 mbps but only between 8pm and 11pm every night. Even normal web browsing is slow. I called Afrihost many times but got nowhere.

I was eventually given a capped account to test with. The capped account performed perfectly even at the times when I was experiencing slow speeds on my account and Afrihost assured me that I was not being throttled.

2 days ago, while on the phone with Afrihost, my speed was dropped in order to test the signal-to-noise ratio. This dropped my download speed to 6.30 mbps. I have since requested that it be brought back up to 10 mbps which Afrihost attempted to do.

The problem is that now my line only syncs at 8 mbps (8128 downstream max rate on the router) and Afrihost says that it is because the SNR is too low. (But from its inception the sync rate on the line has always been 10 mbps). I am now only getting a download speed of 6.30 mbps.

Does anyone have any idea what could be causing these problems or what the solution is.

Thanks

HaHaHa they still trying that it's your line problem, when it obviously is their junk network and not your line. Get a better ISP and demand your line be put back onto it's original speed.

Ask them to check that they haven't forced your port to G.dmt instead of adsl2+

@Sinbad

Hmm... Now you have something interresting. My ADSL knowledge is not that great, maybe you can help.

I am on a 10mbps line and also only syncing at 8128kbps. I assumed that it was because of distance, but seeing the same speed here and your suggestion made me wonder so I did some tests. I disabled G.dmt on my ADSL modem and it would no longer sync. Tried a few combinations and it only syncs with G.dmt enabled. This really sounds like my port is forced to G.dmt.

So, question time:
I am on a 10mbit exchange, so it should support ADSL2+?
Since my line is with Afrihost I should ask them to check that, right?

Yes and yes.

Something on my DSL, always used to sync @ 10Meg, since the move to MTN it sync's @ 8128kbps. Now I'm starting to wonder if this is intentional or just a newbie @ Afrihost ....

Again, check the sync mode.

There could be a variety of factors that affect your sync rate or the ability to get a stable connection mainly dictated by quality of the copper cable in your area or your distance from the closest exchange.

It is not usually connected to the ISP, drop me a PM and I'll check your account to see if there are any issues :)

Perhaps it is time to move to another ISP.
I was looking at openweb's gold unshaped but it's more than double the price of Afrihost.

Damn, I've been spoilt by the speeds I've been getting!

Before I moved my ADSL over to AH, my router connection speed was over 9.5Mb with no problems and never dropped below that and speed tests checks +- 9Mb
The very day AH took control of this my speed dropped down to +-7Mb max...is that a coincidence?
When querying this..I was advised that AH do not throttle lines....
After some thorough checking with Telkom at operator, technician and very senior levels, all have confirmed that Telkom direct managed lines do get priority when it comes to faults and port allocation for best speed, i.e. Telkom managed lines are not throttled.
This then confirms why my average speed which I've mentioned so many times to A/H dropped by +-30% the very day they starting managing my line.
I have since canceled my line with A/H for transfer back to Telkom...

Transfer now with Telkom....wow what a difference!!! speed back to where it was before migrating to AH :-)

After chaning the mode on the router to ADSL2+, i requested that Afrihost resync my modem @ 10meg, for the past few days everything is much better. Now its syncing evertime @ 10Mg
