I want to host Openfire server for spark messaging service , any chance I'll find free low spec vps to run Debian or Ubuntu on and load the Openfire server software on.

Host1plus or DigitalOcean?

Host1plus - It's local.
DigitalOcean - Billed hourly.

http://lowendbox.com/ - Usually has some low end VPSs for about $3/month.

I have a test VPS running on WeLoveServers - they are currently running a $3/month or $30/year deal:

VPS Hosting - JAN15 - LEB 256MB
10 GB Disk Space Storage
3000GB Bandwidth (100Mbps)
256MB Guaranteed RAM + 512 MB vSwap
1 IPv4 Address
SolusVM Access
Full Root Access
Choice of Linux OS
Self Managed

As always, you get what you pay for - but I haven't had huge issues - although I only use it for testing.

I use ramnode and would recommend. My box has gone down 3 times in the last year with frequent updates & speedy resolution in all 3 cases.

They're always running coupons, so see if you can find one. I think I pay about R250 a year for the 256mb, 120GB ssd-cached VPS. It suits my requirements which is all you want at the end of the day.

Host1Plus is pretty cheap and I haven't had issues with my $2.50 box :D Use it as an OpenVPN server as they allow you to enable TUN/TAP on the VMs which is nice.

Can you pull torrents with Ramnode, I see they have a yearly fee of $15, thats not bad if I wanted to create a seedbox for myself.

Currently have a digital ocean account , got a free month.

Installed and setup my OpenFire XMMP server in 2min and its working very very well.

The best I've had in a long time when it comes to cloud/VPS is the new service from Prosperent Cloud. For $9 you get 1gb ram and 30gb SSD and their system is much faster than Linode or DigitalOcean

You can also split up your 1gb RAM / 30gb disk space into smaller instances. Just note that you shouldn't use the full 30gb if you plan on doing that because the drives can't scale down. You can also add more RAM without adding more disk/cpu like most providers force you into. So for a few dollars more you can double your RAM without having to be forced to take more disk or CPU

For what you get with them vs linoda/digitalocean and OpenVZ VPS, it's much much cheaper and better quality for your money

Weird. I wanted to create a VPN for fun but I'd have to pay extra for TUN.

Mine says $0 extra when ordering a new service:

They don't market themselves as a seedbox platform. They have a loosely enforced limit of 20Mbps for torrents, and they do tow the line in terms of DMCA. Therefore not at all ideal for a seedbox, but I do fire up the odd torrent now and then.

TUN/TAP is also free on ramnode, at least on my server.
