Losing sync in JHB (Sandton)

@Threepwood: Maybe you should just call Telkom and ask them to do an LTS line test to see if there is an obvious fault. When the technician arrives give him a copy of the report together with one or two of your routerstats plots and e-mail from Telkom concerning repairs in your area.

It might also be worthwhile to see whether you can obtain the number of CRC errors either directly from your router or via Zyxmon. Even though your line might appear to be working correctly at certain times, a large number of CRC errors over a short period of time usually indicates some type of line fault. After any successful repair you should be able to recognise a major reduction in the number of CRC errors.

Ja maybe I'll do that, someone said they do an LTS over the phone though? Or give you the result that way anyway.

Didn't notice anything aobut CRC errors in my router, and actually I forgot about Zyxmon altogether :p, I'll set it up and see what I can see tomorrow.

Don't know if this is anything to do with CRC errors?

Well i phoned telkom after the stupid stuff like switch off the router and put it back on he saw there was something wrong with the line it dced while i was on the phone with him.
He actually reduced my line speed from 4 mb >2mb still got the same problem.

Not really on this topic but relevant: I have ADSL, (in the Sandton area) no problems until the beginning of August, then started losing sync. Logged a fault, a techie came out and replaced the line from the pole to my house, he then went inside to check the ADSL was working, - all was well. 6 weeks later we had a burglary in the middle of the night, 4 notebooks, LCD TV, clothes, car & house keys, cell phones all gone while we slept. The knew which room to break in to and where everything was. Go figure.

My ADSL 4MB line had been working well [in Forest Town, 1km from Parkview exchange] since May 2007. During August it took a dive ...

Much shouting and screaming with Telkom, reported fault 3x, each time Telkom closed the fault without fixing - or asking - me.

More shouting at regional manager, national complaints hotline etc etc, with Telkom techies mainly lying worse than the average politician.

After much insisting new techie arrived with proper circuit tester. The only way that the line was error free [CRC & hex] was to run it at 384Kbps.

Techie agrees it is a line fault, though no-one knows how to resolve the issue.

I am currently running at 2Mb - with plenty or errors - until I build up enough strength to start a new assault ...

Who needs WoW whilst Telkom is around ?

@Torc1: Sorry to hear about your burglary. You really can't trust anybody these days. There were a number of burglaries in my complex a while back and it would seem that several of the construction workers who were working on one of the homes nearby were involved.

@rrh: Have you tried contacting Telkom to do an LTS line test as recommended above?

@Threepwood: You should be able to get the FEC/CRC/HEC errors as follows. From IE etc. telnet://192.168.1.254 (use the correct IP address for your router). Enter your username and password and then type - wan adsl perfdata - at the command prompt. The figures that you posted are for some of the other ATM loopback diagnostic tests such as the OAM F4 and F5 tests that the P2602 can perform.

Telkom techies

Thanks for your sympathetic words, Yotch. May I suggest that anyone who has to admit one of these people to a home or office take a photo and record their details. Perhaps if we all do this we can establish a pattern and help identify the culprits.

I hope none of you has to suffer what I have during the past 4 weeks, esp. dealing with insurance, assessors, getting quotes for the stuff that was stolen etc., not to mention the trauma my wife and I now have to deal with, not feeling safe in our own home. Shanghai beckons.

Not exactly sure what an LTS test is

I've had Telkom test my line (whilst I'm on the phone to them) and report no problems: perfect sync etc. However, the exchange-based loop-back testing doesn't appear to pick up CRC etc errors - at least, not according to the technicians.

I have also had a Telkom technician on my premises with a specialised circuit tester, i.e. one that is plugged into the ADSL line, replacing the PC/router. The testing (using the dedicated tester) showed high numbers of CRC/hex errors.

As an aside: I noted that the CRC errors appeared to arrive in bursts.

Same problem here logged 2 faults they reduced my unshaped 4mb line to 1mb more stable now but my unshaped cap feels like shaped with the WOW latency i am getting.

@Torc1: Lucky that nobody was injured during the robbery! I was also pretty traumatised after the robberies in our complex especially since my neighbour was shot in the leg but things do go back to normal after a while. This is a completely unacceptable situation though!

@rrh: From what I understand the LTS test is an automated diagnostic test which should indicate whether or not there are any insulation or earthing problems along the line. If the results of this test are not within suitable limits (as explained above in Leftfoot's post) then this should be a good starting point to investigate the fault. Telephone lines were not designed to carry high speed data and any small imperfections such as bad joints or earthing problems can result in synchronisation problems etc.

You know whats also sad in all of this - i experienced it yesterday at a new customer's site : They are complaining of dead internet?

i looked at the mega105's display panel -whoopsie - no sync...

restarted the router - cool i have sync now.

log into the interface - SNR of 5! and syncing at 3400/640!

they are 4km from exchange with attenuation of 62...

What on earth was the Telkom techie thinking when he did the installation?!

reverted to 1024/384 - works 100%

@Nutz: I guess the customer also wanted to get the fastest speed possible for the same cost!

Unfortunately it seems that most customers will just have to accept that slow unreliable ADSL connections will be around for a lot longer as there doesn't appear to be any urgency to shorten the local loop or to upgrade any of the old infrastructure. Even if more companies were allowed to build networks starting from today, it would take several years before services were widespread and presumably even longer for prices to drop.

I re installed my whole system and wasn't using net at all for about 2 weeks.

Have been using it again now for 1 or 2 weeks, with the same horrible sync problems etc, a few days ago the voice line died as well for a while. Yesterday it lost sync at about 3pm voice line gone too, and just never came back.

My mom phoned Telkom and crapped all over them (apparently), a tech came this morning, did some fiddling around, then mentions the lightning protector issue, I told him no the last guy said it might be that blah blah blah, so he did some more fiddling around.

He wasn't here long but he got the line working again adsl and voice, I think he said they reset the port? Definately he said they did something to the port, but they couldn't have assigned a new one 'cos my axxess isp account with vip lock on still connects without changing it.

The line hasn't lost synch since then, about 1pm so it's been stable (not losing sync, noise margin betwwen 5 and 14) for about 5 hours which is much better than it's been before, still will have to test it over a few days at least though.

If I have problems again or if I just feel like it will try that crc errors thing. I just hope my line will be stable now.
