Low Cars / Modded car thread.

Sorry for delayed response. Hate typing on Tapatalk so my replies are short.

Although my car leads a fairly relaxed life, i do some spirited driving occassionally. The mods at this point are purely for aesthetics/sounds. The initial intention when I got the car was to mod it in pursuit of power (hence uprated clutch), but the plan changed when i realised that i don't really want to be driving faster than what the car is capable of in stock form (decision coincidently happened around the birth of my son).

I drive 35km each way for work, mostly freeway, so it helps having the power on tap if need be and be able to maintain 120 easily up a hill.

Admittedly, I am drawn quite strongly to the aesthetics side of modding currently, and especially like lowered cars.. I like a tastefully modded car. Again, this is a preference thing with everyone. Some guys love cars that scrape their sumps on the ground, and the other extreme are the guys who will not even take the dealership branding sticker off their car. To each their own, and respect each others preferences. When i was younger sound was my thing. I still love the performance stuff, but I am happy as a spectator. I will go to drag racing and track events and happily watch on. Getting more cautious as I get older.

And no...I won't drive around with a woke sticker.

I'm ashamed to say that I did go through the sticker phase when I had my Polo and it was my first time having coilovers. Half my back window was filled with stupid ***** like " be patient I'm lowered". One of those face palm memories.

Thanks for taking the time.

In light of the above I think we are mostly on the same page then.

I do miss the power on tap if the GTI when I want to quickly overtake without thinking about it but inverted the slow ass Picanto makes it safer in a way for never getting in those situations in the first place for being slow ass and requiring planning.

Has made me take a lot less risks.

If someone wants to make an 80 degree turn to drive over speedbumps while going 1 km an hour, who are you to interfere?

I drove with a friend once who had his VW dropped. What was supposed to be a fifteen minute drive took upwards of 40 minutes because he took a route with what feels like 20+ speedbumps. Pissed me off whenever we had to zigzag over it.

I'll find comfort in Some of the posters here with lowered cars who don't have hassles with humps and are just ordinary motorists who don't require any special privileges such as an absolute right for the exclusive use of two lanes at a speed hump while other motorists wait.

But truth be told the are too many lowered cars which were not done right and professionally comoared to those who got it right, hence the reservations here.

Looking at pics of the cars posted, I have doubts. I drive a stock standard car with good ground clearance, yet the front bumper does catch some of the badly-made humps a bit.

I agree with you on the risk side. Knowing I have the power on tap does sometimes make me take gaps that I wouldn't in another car. When I took my wife's Vivo to work I would just stay in my lane and totter on at 100km/h. With the Golf I sometimes take the gap, because I can.

Use professionals who can f ot a Bilstein or Koenig kit for you. Don't just take it to a tyre shop or you'll regret it. You'll need at least 15k or more. Here's a M6 with a Bilstein kit:

Lol, thats the way the Zululand Indians cross the bumps even when they drive a bakkie. :crylaugh:

It's everywhere, go to Pretoria and it's the same phenomenon, the head on collisions over the weekend when everyone is drunk but still trying to do that zig zag thing.... They don't care if there's s car on the on coming lane, its like you on the oncoming lane is supposed to know that the they are about to do their thing, complete and utter buffoonery...

Truth. Used to have a Saab 9-5 Aero. Its overtaking ability was huge, so on long trips if there was another truck that needed to be overtaken before two lanes became one I'd just put foot. Would have been tricky if I hadn't quite made it... These days I just chill and wait for the next opportunity.

Red wheels. What happened to the pedestrian he ran over? And why would anyone spend money making a good looking car look like a Boksburg special?

I agree it's everywhere. Even saw a Vivo Maxx doing it the other day. I just went hysterical. I wished I had recorded it.

Currently shopping around for custom original height springs for a Corolla and they are way more expensive than the ones you get at the "tuner" shops. The current ones are also custom but they are sagging and causing high fuel consumption and a bumpy ride.

I have a friend who has the greatest respect for a Saab, everytime I am with him and we see a Saab, he never fails to mention how he was once humbled by one of those while feeling invinsible in his BMW. :D

Seems like they were good cars.

Why would they cause high fuel consumption?

I had two of them, and they were awesome. Real sleepers. Really quick, and a lot of cars were embarrassed by them - particularly the Aero. Mechanically very solid, electrics a bit dodgy though. And new tires required every 30k kms despite rotation, and brake pads every 20k kms.

Still love them, and the prices you can pick them up for now creates much temptation.

But nah, they're old now.

Loved the brand when I was much younger. It was SAAB and BMW. Today I find myself admiring features of a CX-5 and even pondering a purchase. How times change.

Saabs were great, particularly when one got bored of the BMW scene.

Don't blame you re the CX 5 though, the new one is gorgeous!

They were fantastic cars, and really underrated for what they brought to the table really...
