OP. This is the wrong audience for this kinda question. This forum is full of sensible middle aged people. The question is better asked on a motoring forum.
Whatever you do, do not cut or compress your springs. The ride will be horrible and quite unsafe.
I've had H&R springs on 2 cars. 1 slow car and 1 performance hatch. Ride is a little stiffer than stock, but not bone jarring. Handling is improved due to the lower centre of gravity. It was ok for me for a while, but I wanted more low. On both cars I kept the H&R springs for about 6 months before buying coilovers. Both cars ran FK Streetline coilovers. They are cheaper coilovers, but I've been happy with them on my Golf (neatly 3 years now) so I haven't been pressed to get the Koni coilovers I intended buying.
If you are chasing proper low just go for coilovers right away. If its just a little low that you want then you can buy springs.
For all the critics. I run my car lowered every day, and its been this way for the last 3 years. I drive straight over speed humps and treat it just as i would a normal car. Don't generalise. If it isn't too your taste, read and move on. No need to force your opinion on the OP.
Image for reference. I havent need to change anything because of being too low. Tyres wear as normal. Bumpers are ok. Consumption is great (for a 2L).

Agreed. Looks like 18inch wheels? 19 inch wheels will fill the arches better, raise the car off the ground a bit more, allowing you to slam the coilovers down more than if you have 18s

The issue here is, this forum are frequent by educated people. Most will give you adult advice, if you want to go to a forum ehere the IQ is lower you will probably find likeminded people when it comes to modifying a perfectly fine piece of engineering because you don’t like the look.
Most on here would buy a car they like the looks of and keep it as is opposed to buying a car they don’t like the look of and then modify it which will affect the 1000s of hours of testing and engineering to perfect the car.

But now here's an objective question regarding the alleged better handling. Does it go around a track any faster than an otherwise equal car but with stock suspension?
I'm guessing it's probably highly modded otherwise as well so impossible to really compare.

I don't think the issue is education. It's an interest thing. Most people on mybb view cars as A to B appliances. Hence I suggested the OP pose the question on a motoring forum rather than here.
I consider myself educated and would hope that my IQ is at least average (need to get that MENSA test done), but can assure you that no car I buy will go without changes.

Kudos to all that actually gave decent advice even if that was just to not do it.
OP i agree with the people who said don't do it, or rather don't drop it too far and do it properly, from your pic i can see why you want it dropped but at the same time i wouldn't drop it far at all, like 20mm at most. Get proper springs, no compressing or any funny business.
If this is what you want then do it, its your car and your style, most of the ou toppies in here are just jealous and don't understand it.

Yes, most people will tell you not to lower a car. There is some merit to it. But as with everything in life, all in moderation. Lowering a car to the point where you have to go sideways over a speed bump
and hope you don't scrape gate rails in a drive way (I **** you not; I know someone who had a car so lowered, it literally scraped on a gate rail) - then it becomes what I call stupid low. HnRs are not bad and actually improve the look IMHO. Yes, 19s would probably be a better option for this OP. But at the end of the day its their car and their money.
To the OP - Never. Ever. Cut or compress springs. Unless you don't plan on being in this world for long; then go for it.

I can't answer your question regarding a track as my car is very much babied. I don't drive it hard (as in like robot to robot racing). During spirited driving I have noted a marked improvement. I have not raced the car, track or road, to comment on race pace handling.
The car has minimal hardware mods (intake, DP, exhaust, high performance clutch), no SW, so the power is marginally better than stock. Not much.
