Low Cars / Modded car thread.

Probably the best response here. PS: You on VWCSA ? and was that a DubRun event?

Yes, most people will tell you not to lower a car. There is some merit to it. But as with everything in life, all in moderation. Lowering a car to the point where you have to go sideways over a speed bump
and hope you don't scrape gate rails in a drive way (I **** you not; I know someone who had a car so lowered, it literally scraped on a gate rail) - then it becomes what I call stupid low. HnRs are not bad and actually improve the look IMHO. Yes, 19s would probably be a better option for this OP. But at the end of the day its their car and their money.

To the OP - Never. Ever. Cut or compress springs. Unless you don't plan on being in this world for long; then go for it.

Yeah - ex KZN comm

Edit: I think this was DR16 or DR15

I don't think the issue is education. It's an interest thing. Most people on mybb view cars as A to B appliances. Hence I suggested the OP pose the question on a motoring forum rather than here.

I consider myself educated and would hope that my IQ is at least average (need to get that MENSA test done), but can assure you that no car I buy will go without changes.

I think you misunderstood my point. I know highly educated smart people who have also done shyte like this to their cars, and even more stupid shyte. They don’t come onto mybb asking for advice on it though. They will ask where similar minded people will hang out. Mybb is not that place. Ridicule was expected on here :)

Which was what Ecko_1's point was.

Yes different wheels. White ones were sold some time ago.

I can't answer your question regarding a track as my car is very much babied. I don't drive it hard (as in like robot to robot racing). During spirited driving I have noted a marked improvement. I have not raced the car, track or road, to comment on race pace handling.

The car has minimal hardware mods (intake, DP, exhaust, high performance clutch), no SW, so the power is marginally better than stock. Not much.

Yeah robot-to-robot is silly and doesn't really carry much merit.

I was just hoping for some means of objective confirmation outside of the seat-dyno.

Now the question I'm left with is why go to all that trouble if you aren't really going to drive it for any particular performance reason and baby it instead?

I guess I fall outside your earlier comments because I'm a petrolhead and even so don't see the need to fiddle with suspension and drop the car when it's going to be used on the road as a daily driver.

Based on your comment that you wouldn't buy a car without changing it I would have the exact opposite response because I would question where the value lies in those changes.

To each their own, I just object to the fact that to qualify as a petrolhead you need to make changes to the car.

If anything in my view a petrolhead (or rather a better driver) is the one who can jump into any car and make it work without the need to change it.

As in I would find it more respectable that someone could jump into 5 different stock cars and put decent lap times in on them, than one oke who can only put in decent laps on his own car which he perfectly customized to his driving style.

But the really BURNING question is this : Would you drive a car that says "Stay Woke" (in pink) and still have any self respect left? :)

I take exception...

I want a fun car to drive, even though my daily driver currently is a "boring" old double cab for financial reasons...

But I wouldn't go about changing things on a high end vehicle like that on the advice of some retarded tyre shop though.. it would go to a proper tuning shop and decent money would be spent... Though I'm not a fan of lowering like that, if only because most people in Durban take it too damn far and then turn into annoyances on the road.

Not many would; my self included. What does stay woke even mean? :crylaugh:

As for the rest of your post: 9/10 people who lower their cars do it for looks, not for performance.

How did I miss this one...haven't read through all posts but will catch up.

OP. This is the wrong audience for this kinda question. This forum is full of sensible middle aged people. The question is better asked on a motoring forum.

Whatever you do, do not cut or compress your springs. The ride will be horrible and quite unsafe.

I've had H&R springs on 2 cars. 1 slow car and 1 performance hatch. Ride is a little stiffer than stock, but not bone jarring. Handling is improved due to the lower centre of gravity. It was ok for me for a while, but I wanted more low. On both cars I kept the H&R springs for about 6 months before buying coilovers. Both cars ran FK Streetline coilovers. They are cheaper coilovers, but I've been happy with them on my Golf (neatly 3 years now) so I haven't been pressed to get the Koni coilovers I intended buying.

If you are chasing proper low just go for coilovers right away. If its just a little low that you want then you can buy springs.

For all the critics. I run my car lowered every day, and its been this way for the last 3 years. I drive straight over speed humps and treat it just as i would a normal car. Don't generalise. If it isn't too your taste, read and move on. No need to force your opinion on the OP.

Image for reference. I havent need to change anything because of being too low. Tyres wear as normal. Bumpers are ok. Consumption is great (for a 2L).

Don't assume. Most of the original answers were from people I recognised from quite a few of the motoring related threads, and the biking thread, and some of them I know have high performance vehicles, even though I don't know any of them personally. A few of us also frequent motoring forums (VWCSA etc.). It was also suggested (myself included) he do just that and go ask on a motoring forum (just in case he didn't like the answer we all knew was coming). OP decided to get defensive and rude. Jokes all around it is then.

Yes, you definitely don't start at a tyre shop to lower your half a bar car. :crylaugh:
Also agreed; some people lower their cars so much it because unsafe and unusable on the roads. These people IMHO need to reevaluate their life choices.

Get woke man:

Woke
A state of perceived intellectual superiority one gains by reading The Huffington Post.

Google says...

Like most slang, the meaning of "woke" changes depending on who's saying it, and to whom. Among black people talking about Ferguson, "stay woke" might mean something like: "stay conscious of the apparatus of white supremacy, don't automatically accept the official explanations for police violence, keep safe."

Still doesn't make sense to me.

As for the rest of your post: 9/10 people who lower their cars do it for looks, not for performance.

Yup and in the looks department I can openly say it looks retarded in most cases and very DIY. Much like the fake xenons and all the rest that usually go along with it.

But that's why I asked about an objective measurement as to the technical side of the coin because in the engineering side of the world it's meant to enable better aerodynamics through causing less drag and also to add down force and thereby improve the handling of the vehicle in question. It's not strictly supposed to change the handling based on suspension working differently.

So considering aerodynamics once has to question how it makes any objective difference at all to a normal road going non-super car from a purely objective point and view and therefore some objective measure is required.

The easiest then would be lap times from a stock vs lowered car in the hands of the same driver.

And then if it does make a justifiable real world measurable handling difference one has to ask if the same wouldn't be achieved through other means like changing the heel/toe/camber etc, while maintaining normal looks and practicality.

As a petrolhead I have never felt the need to do it to my own car and of the multitude of very fast and often very expensive cars I've driven none of them have ever felt the need to do so either.

Most of the time it's lesser cars where the bar is already so low that even if you put the best **** in the world on it there wouldn't be much improvement.

I mean why exactly lower a Corolla or CitiGolf? What are you gaining on an already slow as **** car? 0.01 seconds? Sense it does not make.

The only car I've driven that was stupidly low and where it made sense was a built for purpose track car. And that car would never even get around the block on a normal road for that very same reason.

The issue here is, this forum are frequent by educated people. Most will give you adult advice, if you want to go to a forum ehere the IQ is lower you will probably find likeminded people when it comes to modifying a perfectly fine piece of engineering because you don’t like the look.

Most on here would buy a car they like the looks of and keep it as is opposed to buying a car they don’t like the look of and then modify it which will affect the 1000s of hours of testing and engineering to perfect the car.

I think that sums it up

I put 99.99% of people who modify their car's design into the low IQ block. OP demonstrated this perfectly by trusting the opinion of a salesperson on the effect of modifying the suspension of the car on said car's ride comfort. I don't have to ask whether the salesperson pulled that prediction out their @$$ given how many factors can affect ride comfort.
