I don't get the wireless charging though. Seriously, maybe someone can explain it to me. Instead of a wired charger it makes use of a wired charging matt. WTF is the difference? Doesn't your portable land line telephone do the same thing? IE charge while it's connected to its base?

Wireless charging has been around for sometime. I have had a 3 pad Powermat at home for some time noW (meaning i can "connect" 3 devices at the same time to charge).

Powermat has been available in SA for sometime now. Check most local Incredible Connection shop or look at the website.

Also this article from MyBB from a couple of years ago. I have the same Powermat as shown in the photo.

Nokia is the king of cross platform compatibility. One of Nokia's major strategies is the production and sale of cross platform accessories. Headphones, charging pillows and speakers will all be cross platform compatible. Every phone or other device that has NFC and inductivee wireless charging will be compatible with Nokia accessories. So, you can use a Galaxy SIII on a Fatboy charging pillow or a Monster Headphone set or a JBL speaker set. These are all third party OEMs.

Wireless charging, as I've always understood it meant charging over the airwaves, literally, no wires, no mats, no base stations, complete device portability while charging.... This to me is just more marketing mumbo jumbo BS.

Yeah. I also thought it was supposed to be like that, i.e. no wires at all. However, there is such a lot that can be done through NFC that justifies it being included in a marquee phone. Not having it in one is actually a major disappointment because of these various uses it has. Nokia has two major uses for NFC besides payment - wireless headphones and speakers. Payment enablement would actually be only a bonus. As for the wireless charging, Nokia wants to make it mainstream through partnerships with Airlines and and coffee shops - so you don't even need to carry around your own charger. Further, the uses of NFC are really only up to th imagination. It just depends on how creative app developers are really. It has such huge potential and I am sure it will start to realise these potentials with the release of Nokia Lumias.

If you don't have NFC in a new phone now, you are essentially screwed for the next two years. And we know how fast this industry moves.

No, this is proper wireless charging. You have a copper coil sitting inside the transmitter that vibrates at a particular frequency. Another coil inside the phone picks up the vibrations from a distance of about 3cm and starts to vibrate in tandem, allowing kinetic energy to transfer to the device placed on the mat. Efficiency is around 85% energy transferred and its easy for third-party manufacturers to make wireless induction transmitters in all shapes and sizes that conform to the Qi standard.

Also, NFC uses a similar technique for information transfer. Its quite simple to marry the two technologies together to use one coil for both information and energy transfer.

Just realized the Lumia 920 does not come with built-in FM radio, like the 800 and 900....and it's something I use quite a lot.

Not the end of the world, but with all the funky speakers and headsets available for the Lumia range, it would have been so nice to plug your Lumia in and let the tunes pump.

Same here, but with all the cool accessories for the Lumia range, I feel it's a bit sad.

Come on Nokia, give me my FM radio with my Lumia 920, then it will just be perfect!

I remember the horror years back of unplugging my Nokia N95 from its charger only to have bits of the socket on the phone itself remain firmly stuck to the charger's prong... I guess the plug wore out to the point of self-destruction. With current smartphones needing anything from at least one to a couple of top-up charges during the day I think there's a good argument to be made for charging mats. I'll certainly ensure my next phone has the option.

Agreed it's nice to just plonk it down and thats that.

You can always go for the Lumia 800, it's a 3.7'' display....but, in real life, it's not much smaller than my Samsung Galaxy S2.

Yeah I love my Lumia 800 as is, perfect size as far as I'm concerned.

I think the reason why phones are getting bigger these days (yes, Apple also caved in) is because mobile devices are more and more content consumption devices.

A larger screen makes it easier to navigate websites, view videos see awesome pictures and even watch TV.

By the way, what happened to DVB-H (receiving TV signals on handheld devices i.e. SABC or eTV signals on your mobile). The last time I checked they (Nokia) were selling DVB-H headphones so your cell phone can receive TV signals (i.e on your Nokia E6 for instance). I have a feeling that the same limitations that services like Netflix are experiencing are also the same that DVB-H is also experiencing i.e. restrictions by the industries involved e.g. movie industry trying to get paid for every movie ever produced and thus not making them freely available.

Bottom line is, larger screens are the way to go because technology is making content available more on mobile devices. The only limitations come when content producers hinder its proliferation because they feel it has to be made available in a way that benefits them.
