About screen size : what size do you guys reckon is perfectly acceptable?

The only gripe I've had with my Nokia 5230 is that the screen is a bit too small for touch typing without a stylus. My current phone, Samsung Galaxy S, is a lot bigger, and it is easier to type on it.

I had a look at the Galaxy 2/3, and it is a bit too big. But it must be nice to have all that screen real estate for watching movies/typing love letters etc. :D

FWIW - I also had to set up a couple of iPhones as well - and the keyboard is tiny, not something I would like to use frequently.

I was fighting with my Galaxy S2 for a long time, also thought the phone is just too big.

Was constantly switching between my Galaxy Ace and S2, but made peace with my S2 and now enjoying it a lot.

I'm sure the same will hold true for the Lumia 920, it's just such a gorgeous phone that I wouldn't mind lugging it around. :)

Something the size of the Galaxy S2 is the absolute biggest that I'm willing to live with. Anything bigger is just ridiculous. The S3, while not as big as the Note, is still far too big IMO.

I would love to, but it will all depend on how much Nokia will be selling it for. Really hope Microsoft can subsidize it a bit. :)

The joke around town is that they just added an extra row of app icons. Yawn.

And "yawn" it is. The company that used to keep us on pins and needles, now puts us to sleep. They are playing it safe. Big. Rich. Powerful. Bored of themselves. They put less in to research and development than others (around 2%). Why should they care? The iPhone 5 sold out online in a day.

The other side of the story is the underdogs in the smartphone market. Nope, not RIM and BlackBerry (think the Walking Dead), but Nokia and Microsoft Windows Phone. But man are they getting press!

The Nokia Lumia series, with the 920 nipping at the heels of the iPhone 5. In many ways, it's a far superior phone with a slew of features. It's gotten the attention of many.

Recently, the new Yahoo CEO offered all Yahoo employees a free smartphone (except BlackBerry!), and the list shows the leaders such as iPhone 5, Galaxy III, and....Nokia Lumia 920. Wow.

Now, how does Apple respond? They are still sleeping under the apple tree...they don't have to respond, or do anything.

How does Nokia respond? Hey, Yahoo employees...we will give you a free wireless charger (one of the many features the Lumia has) if you pick us! (https://twitter.com/DougatNokia/status/247756872512315392). Smart marketing. And they are hungry...which is good. They need this product to survive, they need to reinvent themselves, and they will risk everything to do it.

This is why I'm getting a Nokia Lumia 920 (not for a free charger, I don't work for Yahoo), but how Nokia and Microsoft are in this market...underdogs...hungry underdogs with flesh in their eyes. They want it bad. They are willing to do things to get that market. Good for them. I want a company (and here are two...starting a pack of wolves) for my business.

When a company starts sleeping, they don't do too well. Microsoft knows this. They WERE the leaders in smartphones, but they didn't innovate enough and Apple took the lead. Apple knew this, they were on the brink of bankruptcy and had to have Microsoft bail them out and pledge to make software for years to stay afloat (oh yes Mac fans, Microsoft is the main reason Apple is even alive today...they were dead).

We are even seeing this with the 'app' makers. This ones who were scrappy hungry dogs, are now fat and sleepy. They 'refuse' to make apps for Windows Phone 8. They don't care...unless Microsoft pays them to make an app on their own. Seriously? You know what, then I don't care about you, and I mean that. Remember when the iPhone had NO apps? Amazingly those who started early become rich, really rich. They took the risk and came out big. These guys? Good riddance. Some other app maker will be hungry and take their place.

What about Microsoft? Oh yeah, they are big and lots of money too, but they don't dominate this smartphone market. Far from it. They are clawing their way up, but they are hungry too. They took this biggest risk of all...pissing off their own fanboys. They reinvented Windows with Windows 8. They realized it can't stay the way it is, and mobile (to include tablets) are the future. Their Windows 8 software receives all sorts of reviews and attacks...and praise. I think they are smart. They know they still own the business sector...and those who know Windows 8, will already be 'trained' for tablets and phones...since they use the same tile interface. But that's a big risk...but it's one they have to take.

Apple, meh...they don't care. They throw in a few iOS features into a new Mac operating system and people fall all over themselves. I can see why (I was one of these people)...the marketing is BRILLIANT. That website...BRILLIANT marketing. They excel at making you want to be part of that world.

But, no thanks anymore. My loyalty lies with those who are hungry and care about me. Apple, you just don't care. The iPhone 5, iOS 6, and OS X Mountain Lion really showed it. Yawn. Wake up before that Apple rots and hits you on the head (but don't worry, I'll record it on a Lumia 920 for you).

However, with regards the FM radio receiver transmitter thing, I am a little surprised to hear that there is no receiver. Transmitter would be a new thing but something I don't think many people know about let alone think of.

There are three possibilities.
1. Nokia did not emphasise it this time around because probably the Zune replacement is going to deal with that - remember they still need to detail to us what WP8 will have,
2. An app could be the solution (perhaps also for transmission) and
3. Radio could be part of Nokia's accessories plan. Right now I cannot listen to radio without my headphones. Or perhaps through speakers (JBL), which you pair via bluetooth or NFC.

At the end of the day I cannot see how radio cannot be part of the Lumia 920. I think there will be a number of ways through which the radio issues you raise will be addressed.

But, lets keep our eyes on that one.

There's an FM transmitter on the N8 already.
 
Surely with an app as good as Tunein radio now available on just about every platform, the FM receiver is redundant?

I actually hadn't heard of that, that was why I was saying what I said. And I think my knowledge of mobile specs is a little above average so I doubt if most people know about it. Thanks for letting me know about it.

I will be looking out for that in mobile spec sheets from now on.

Excuse my ignorance, but how does an FM transmitter on a mobile phone work. For instance, how do you connect it to your speakers of your car radio for example. Headphone jack?

Set a frequency on your phone to broadcast on, set the same frequency on your car radio, then any music played through your phone will be broadcast to your car.

The novelty wore off for me because your playlist still needed to be controlled from your phone, which is pretty dangerous while you're driving.
