M3 burns after revving competition

Insurance definitely won't be paying... thus was pure negligence and by an unlisted driver as well
 
How can a car be over revved? The ecu on mine limit my revs to 2000, unless in launch control mode. The other option would be if the vehicle moves while revving, then obviously the protection is disabled.
 
With higher revving you get more heat into the system and since in this case there is no airflow, the heat dissipation is severely limited. So yeah. School fees IMO.

The exhaust was probably glowing red hot, but it still needs a fuel source to ignite. Maybe oil spewed out some where from all the led line revving.
 
I wish more details were given, I would share as I am also interested in exactly why it happened to that paticular M3, I mean there are a ton of people who own these things and drive them like lunatics with no such incident.

Someone out there had an awful Monday, that's for sure.

Not necessarily. You will be amazed at what suddenly becomes combustible if the temperature is high enough. All you need is an oxygen rich environment and a high enough temp and almost anything will burn.

Still find it unlikely that just revving will cause the exhaust to get that hot. The load on the engine is actually very low when you do that, so there will not be a large amount of exhaust gas produced, especially compared to running at full throttle.
More likely there was a legitimate engine failure caused by the revving abuse (high vacuum in the cylinders caused by high RPM with low throttle opening) that punched a hole in the block, spilling oil onto the exhaust.

I was in the cat industry for years and I can guarantee you it is possible.
One of the tests performed on the cat is a full system run test.
They actually run the engine at high revs for an extended duration to force the cat & exhaust to burn red to find defects.
That is why grassshields & heatshields are installed.
But these shields fail as do many other systems put in place to prevent fire/damage.
Quite often the systems are bypassed.
Cats are the first thing to be cut out which means the temp sensor goes with it.

Yes, full load.
Otherwise the test is pointless.

Revving the car in neutral is nowhere near full load. Therefore nowhere near full heat passed on to the exhaust system.
