Mac vs Windows for programming, computer science degree at Unisa

He's a student though. He might not have a choice - SSDs are coming down in price, but still not that cheap.

Although, thinking about it, it is more likely that he will get an SSD than 16GB of RAM. 16GB of RAM tends to push the price up quite a bit, for some reason.

Both post purchase works out cheaper. Also gives him a large hdd to can use to get some large Unix iso and instructional videos (haha) from other students.

256Gb SSD's are well under R1k these days and even less 2hnd. Ram new is still pricey though but not to bad secondhand, R1000 should get you 16gb or hopefully the machine comes with a single 8Gb and it has 2 slots.

That's another thing, never assume ram is replaceable on modern laptops, the X1 and a few others have either soldered ram or one soldered and only one slot upgradable.

Personal preference and affordability. Both are fine.

I prefer Mac, mainly because of my unix background. I don’t like Linux desktops. I have always run MySQL and Oracle on Linux servers.

You can do all of this on Windows as well.

In my experience “corporate” aren’t that hung up on which os you learnt on unless you are looking for an os specific job. Of course there are exceptions.
