MacBook Air or Pro

Yea, I bought mine in the US, not on sale and paid $1499, incl tax. I qualified for a bit of discount, which covered the tax. That works out to about 15500. Bought my previous MBA from Hong Kong 2 and a half years ago, sold it this year for 200 rand less than what I paid for it, due to the price increases here.

Regardless of US pricing or SA pricing, 15-20k is still quite steep for a 13" laptop, but considering you get the OS and the entire iWorks suite as well, its relatively similar to what you would pay for other systems with similar specs.

I saw our new work Lenovo T440 laptops yesterday with Windows 8.1

Worse screen than retina, 500gb normal HDD and 8gb ram comes in at around R16k.

And that's volume pricing on around 1000 units.

I think everything is just crazy expensive at the moment. Agreed.

Just a question - how do you pay $1499 including US Sales tax ?

Have a mate going over in Jan - just couldn't wait this time around otherwise would have gone that route as well.

ordered my mbp late 2013 13-inch 512gb, 8gb ram from amazon.com for $1599 and applecare for $149 on black friday, used postbox courier to deliver it and it got here in two days...as a new mac user loving it so far.

Sales tax varies by the state you are shipping to (for internet purchases) or buying from (for physical retail stores). Some states have NO sales tax. e.g Oregon, New Hampshire etc

2 days? What about local customs?

I ordered on Saturday Morning (Black Friday sale was still on] and it was in my hands by Wednesday Lunch, should have said after two business days.
As for customs I declared the laptop at its actual value as I didn't want any problem. No duties on laptop but have to pay taxes - which is 0.154*value of laptop.

EDIT:
It worked out just above 20k including shipping and customs for MBP 13-inch (512gb, 8gb ram), Apple care and a laptop bag [Skooba Satchel v3 Mini which was on sale for $49 - couldn't resist :D http://www.skoobadesign.com/skooba-satchel-v-3-mini]

That is an awesome deal you got there!

I just tried to order the Macbook Air from amazon.com but they say they can't ship this particular item to South Africa due to warranty issues

Do you recommend them then ? Will give them a try next time around.

Also - is it insured and trackable from the US via them ? Seems good based on the FAQ.

Amazon.com wont ship electronics to SA, you will have to use a mail forwarding company such as postbox-courier, myus, shop and ship etc.

I have used them plenty of times and will recommend them.
Have bought other electronics through them such nexus 4, nexus 5, small items and had no problems. If you have any queries you can always email them and Gary form Postbox courier will usually respond quite fast.

Thanks

Stopped using MyUS because they became ridiculously expensive with their shipping rates, even for premium users.

Macbook arrived, installing Mavericks.

I must admit apple make good looking machines, heavy though.

Should be fine updating from 10.8.3............

Item was brand spanking new and sealed, 11k for a laptop that retails at most places for R15k

Good times! Glad it finally all worked out!

Don't want to wade back in time - name of the seller over at BoB(?) - will chalk them up as reputable now.

Heavy? You get a 17"?

13" Pro is extremely light.

Enjoy the machine!

Its 2kg, getting used to the actual trackpad now, also borrowed a magic mouse, love this mouse but doesn't move too well on wooden desk surface.

Pro's screen not as crisp as Macbook air 13

Did a full charge, says battery remaining 12hrs

2KG for a laptop isn't too bad. Depends what you had before. My biggest issue with the magic mouse is the shape. Its too flat, my hand is used to a more curved mouse, has a strange user experience.

I recommend using the trackpad unless you need the accuracy/precision of a mouse.
