Hi guys ,

So I have an issue with my 2010/2011 MacBook Pro . When I switch the machine on it just takes me to a grey screen see the pictures attached.

I haven’t been having any issues with the machine. Started it up 1 day and this . It’s still running snow leopard but that’s just because I haven’t been able to update it via the App Store .

I’m not to familiar with the machine , my windows machine was stolen recently so this is my only other option . If anyone can assist would be much appreciated I am situated in Durban

Start it up in recovery mode by pressing Command and R at boot and check the hard drive using disk utility.

Early 2011 Macbook Pros have an issue with the graphics card soldering material. Early symptoms are graphical glitches, especially when booting, and then later on occasional lockups. Gets worse until its pretty much unusable.

Hope its not that :-) I had mine 'fixed' by a third party and that lasted 3 months. Then Apple acknowledged the issue and offered free repairs for a period (now ended).

I hope it isn’t this .. like I said I haven’t had any issues previously

I would go rather go to a technician , my 2015 MBP used to do something similar after my first year with it, it would hang on a grey screen for some minutes, iStore swapped out the HDD and RAM.

So I ran Disk Utility and this came up , would a format and reinstall work here ? Or does the HDD need to be changed out ? Anyone know cost of something like that ?

The drive could be on its last legs, you can either buy a new HD or a SSD, whatever your budget allows.

I should mention that you get a copy of macOS Sierra or High Sierra and do a clean install, not reinstall snow leopard and update from there.

Thanks for this , might be a stupid question but where can I get a copy of Sierra ?

That is what my 2010 did. The cause was the HDD.

Regarding repairs. Depends on how brave you are. There are tutorials on fixing it yourself, but you might need to buy some odd screwdrivers to do it.
