Mahindra is set to unveil a CNG option for its popular XUV 3XO compact SUV, amidst the rising popularity of CNG-powered cars in India.
This would be the fourth powertrain variant for the 3XO, which already offers two turbo-petrols, one diesel, and an electric option.
The CNG variant is expected to arrive with the entry-level 1.2L mStallion TCMPFi turbo-petrol rather than the higher-spec direct injection motor to keep costs down.
Mahindra has a re-engineering job on its hands to accommodate the CNG tank without making the smallest boot in the segment any tinier, so it remains to be seen if they opt for a split setup à la Tata or go with an under-boot setup.
Rising fuel prices have led to increased popularity of CNG models, with several offerings in the compact car and entry-level MUV segments from multiple manufacturers, though the compact SUV segment has only seen it offered with the Tata Nexon and Maruti Suzuki Brezza so far.
The upcoming CAFE-3 norms in April 2027 are an added incentive for Mahindra, as its passenger vehicle portfolio is diesel-heavy and it will need to lean harder on powertrain diversification to meet stringent fleet emission norms.
