Make money as a student

I'd also say tutoring at your university, it's the easiest workplace to get to and they pay pretty well for generally very relaxed and easy work. Your "boss" will probably be an old lecturer and you're working with students, far better than waitering.

Otherwise stealing waatlemoen sounds awesome, might have to wait for the summer months before you starting ropping them from the side of the road though.

Have to be honours or masters student though.

We could start from 3rd year in Commerce and Humanities. At UCT there were also jobs like working in the computer labs for students.

Well im in UCT and im a tutor (this is my 2nd year tutoring, im in 3rd year now) . its really convienient working where you study, our CS department is well run and has its own way of doing things and it works really well, you dont need masters students to teach younger students how to program, i know in particular in the engineering department (besides one course that I can think of now) all of the tutors are postgrad level (like doing thier MEng) which is more understandable

Good luck... I've been looking around, only to get rejected from bursaries, and vac work a like :(.

I'm also in the top 10% of my class apparently, so I don't know why I'm getting rejected from everywhere (Well, I do know why, but it's racist to say why).

Tell me how did were you "looking around" ? PM me, I maybe have had alot of luck or maybe im doing something right, maybe I can help you out with your "looking around" strategy, I applied for 3 internships and got 2 back... I also know of many students (my peers) who just plain advertise on gumtree/linkedin/jobseekingsites and they get responses from normal SME IT Agencies who need abit of help. If you were in cpt i could give you some referrals

I think I have mentioned this before on the forum, but my mate's gf is also struggling to get bursaries. She is studying to become a CA and she only got one bursary(of R5000) from a small company cos her mom works at the company. She is also the top student in her class.

R5000 is not much though!

I will help you to make extra money

I'm an engineering student looking to make some extra money. Due to the nature of my studies, I can't really keep a part time job (my field require ALOT of studying and I have very erratic hours). Are there any reasonable and flexible online jobs out there? Something I could do whenever I have some time on my hands?

I also tried part time work as an engineering student and gave up fast as it did not work to study all week and work all weekend. You need some time to chill and during project deadlines and exams weekends are needed for more varsity work. The way I got through was using my breaks very well. The year end break depending on when exams finish can be almost 3 months long so getting at least 10 weeks of work out of that period helps a lot as that would net me around R10K which would help me through the rest of the year if I stretched it. Also in the other breaks I would do odd jobs like tree felling. To take out 1 smallish tree can cost R500 with the tree fellers so just do it yourself. R500 for a half days work ain't bad.

A lot of my mates would tutor school kids and earn decent money. If you go alone and have your own client base you can get a bit of money buts its easier to go via one of the companies. They take a cut of your salary but can get you more students to tutor.

OP, your excuse of a diffult / time consuming degree isn't really an excuse.
I worked all through my engineering degree, from promoting gym supplements on weekends to tutoring maths and science to high school students during the week.
In my final two years I was working part time at a corporate bank (part-time was still most of my time).
You study when you have a gap, and you sleep a little less than most people. You don't have a social life. You have zero F*&k around time.

If you can't handle it, then suck it up from a financial point of view and don't work.
