Totally agree with you on this front....

2 of my cats try to maul me on a regular basis, but since they're little its nothing more than playing to me.

All dogs should be treated with respect they deserve.
to manipulate a dog based on its features is no worse than manipulating another person.

I would however state that bad breeding, ie: a breeder using a fighting Pitbull in his breeding spawn, will cause unwanted traits and behaviors. Another example, my Golden Retriever used to hunt Birds and moles out of it's own, not exactly inline with what the breed is known for.

Also another thing that should be noted is the attitude and behavior of the owner and the way they raise their dog. If a dog is raised to be overtly aggressive to other dogs and people, the owner should be held accountable, and the dog should be killed. It causes bad reputations for owners of the same breed of dog and it gives a breed a bad rap.

I know my dogs can and will kill a fully grown man no problem. I have them as guard dogs and treat them as such. I will not want guard dogs and treat them like kids. It just doesn't work. I'll get a poodle then or something :p

Advice given to us by the pit bull rehab and rescue center we volunteer at. I know he is not everyone's cup of tea ,but Cesar Milan offers similar avdice;

You can use a loud, strong voice or grunt directly at him and pull up from the back of his neck and collar – not from the top, but from the back and pull up, otherwise he can interpret this as you getting into the fight as well, and this is when the dog can turn on the human and bite him because his level of intensity is so high, he doesn’t think “oh, that’s the human.” You’re just another dog in the fight and before you know it, the dog you’re trying to defend is coming after you.

Another technique is the ''wheelbarrow''. Grab the dog under its rear hips, lift it and then try and turn it away.

Stand behind one of the dogs and grab him by his back legs. Lift his legs — much like you would a wheelbarrow — and pull him away from the other dog. As you step backward, move around in a slow circle so the dog has to side-step with his front legs. This reduces the chance of the dog turning around to bite you. Ideally, you should have another person do the same thing for the other dog in the fight.

We've also had to unfortunately employ the lift and choke technique on our own bull terrier as well but it stopped a fight within seconds and we were able to walk him outside and away from the chaos.

The thing with this breed and other game dogs like them is that they are not bred to give up the fight. They will physically fight themselves to a standstill, so clapping, shouting and water is likely not going to stop them. Your best bet is to physically neutralise them if possible.
 
Just signed a lease in a complex in Harties. Moving out from JHB, so trying to see if it works before I buy. Hoping I don't have to invest in a lion to be safe!

I'm extremely happy!!!

Best choice I have made to date. Traveling to Pretoria for work is getting to me though :( But won't change a thing!

I work from home so all good! Caribbean Beach Club (next to Kosmos) will be my new home from July.... :)

Yea, leave at 06:00 get to work around 7:45

Leave work 16:15 get home around 18:00

But this includes dropping off and picking up the kids from school. Eldest in a Hostel only fetch her on Fridays and drop her off Monday mornings, when I leave home at 5am.
The evenings and the weekends make it ALL WORTH IT!

Ofc all animals should be treated well, just saying that what you can do with a collie for example is not something you can get away with when it comes to a bull terrier or pit bull. An unsocialised collie might be snappy, but an unsocialised pit bull terrier will be dangerous and destructive.

Breeding is a major thing as well. Cross breeding and over-breeding can both impact on the quality of dog in terms of its temperament.
