Many cancelled DStv Premium subscribers will be back - MultiChoice CEO

It reminds me of when Blackberry thought they could keep customers by keeping blackberry messanger exclusively on Blackberry devices. How wrong they were. Whatsapp ate their lunch.

I will only go back to DSTV if they allow me to choose my own boquet. I don't need religion, kids, reality and shitty series and movie channels. I need a few news and business channels, rugby, cricket, tour de france, dakar, some gholf and tennis. That's it. I don't want loads of soccer channels that I don't watch.

They must wake up, they shafted us for far too long.

If you only have it for f1, then just subscribe to the dedicated f1 service and save yourself a crap load...

I am one of those who haven't been watching games the past 3 years, I just check some highlights on youtube for what that is worth. I have been checking out IPTV as an alternative and they have all the channels however, not sure if I want to go down that route, it will mean TV over VPN most of the time?

Can anyone comment about the risks of IPTV now that your ISP have to monitor your internet usage?

That's not realistic. A sport-only bundle for R200-R250 is realistic when you look at the price of eg. Sky Sports.

An entertainment bundle for say R100, maybe R50 for a documentary bundle etc.

Their biggest issue is their stubborn refusal to change their model. Instead of decoupling and selling specific bouquets, if you just want a few channels that happen to be on Premium, you have to get the entire Premium.

People are fed up. But it's cool, a few rugby games will bring them all back...

Find a decent IPTV service, watch the games on Sky, then watch another four or five months of all sport ever for the same price as a month of DStv.

No.

They need to get in way, way below that. I pay $7 for my IPTV sub. I get tens of thousands of TV channels globally. All sports channels you can think of. Coming in at R299 not worth it for me.

Even that is way above what you mentioned. Not going to get it for that price anywhere. That service is probably selling it below cost and running at a loss like all others to gain market share.

How have you missed F1 TV all this time? $5 pm and available in SA without VPNs or DNS services. Everything is included, live.

Streaming services. They will not see the competition coming. Currently we don't really have streaming services that cover rugby, cricket etc. But they will come, even if regulation requires. Only practical alternative currently is iptv, but not so legal.

Motorsport.tv too. $40 a year and covers a wide variety of Motorsport.

It's not expensive as a package where there's everything for everyone, the younger generation is loaded most with very little responsibilities.

I always feel I am paying too much because the channels I watch are few but it's good value for family viewing.
 
Never had DSTV other than in the occasional holiday flat and been very unimpressed with it when I did have access to it. If you only have it 1 week every 2 years and after a week you are sick of repeats it tells you something is wrong. The main issue for me is fixed broadcast time. I could never ever go back to a service like that. I click to play when I am ready to watch, not the other way round. This ain't the 1980's anymore.

Showmax is Multichoice and is affordable and has a decent catalogue. I watch a lot of stuff on that. Once they expand sport on that I may actually watch cricket again sometimes. For now I follow the score on the app.

As a father of two little ones and a millennial myself (mid-thirties) I find it difficult to understand this sentence.

In my case, DSTV Premium would be nice to have for cartoons and sport and movies and such, but its by far and away too expensive. I'd rather use the money for faster Internet + another streaming service. Also I find it kinda boring and it sucks that its not on-demand.

My (much) older sister and her husband love their DSTV but also don't mind slower Internet. By contrast my younger brother and his wife have the fastest Internet and no DSTV. My mother has snail-paced Internet but DSTV Premium. All the younger people we know do not have DSTV at home. This is why I said it seems to be a generational thing.
