My (much) older sister and her husband love their DSTV but also don't mind slower Internet. By contrast my younger brother and his wife have the fastest Internet and no DSTV. My mother has snail-paced Internet but DSTV Premium. All the younger people we know do not have DSTV at home. This is why I said it seems to be a generational thing.

It is very definitely a "generational thing".

All the "entertainment that was available was radio, then TV, plus cinema. That is it.

I would never have subscribed to DSTV IF it had not been or the fact that terrestrial coverage where we live was non-existent when we moved into our house.

Never been particularly bothered about "slow Internet", lost interest in DSTV, when I discovered the family were glued to the SABC soapies anyway, and only watched minimal sport.

BUT, I got very used to being able to record, and watch anything we do watch delayed and on-demand, NOT tied to an increasingly useless broadcast schedule.

My mom watches only two programs, both are soapies, the Tv is switched on at the start, and switched off at the end.

I feel like you are overstating their problems. MultiChoice definitely sees the competition coming, heck they even trying to co opt them with that cringy set up on their new decoder (although it could get less cringe with the proposed fibre plus premium deal in the works).

And let's not even start with how shrewd they are with the sports. They got the sport's governing bodies even doing their bidding at times. I'm just not sure any big time player has the appetite to take them on.

He's suggesting that folks will return to the Premium bouquet if rugby returns. Why doesn't he make SS Football available to Premium subscriber only and see if soccer fans choose to upgrade, thereby completely negating the need for rugby to achieve the same.

I'm sure Premier League coverage used to only be on Premium... It isnt anymore I see

They'll continue to be a cash cow as long as they're allowed to control pay TV

I think PSL coverage is a big money-spinner for Multichoice though
That's a big part of their mass market appeal imo
