My bf and I often love 'taking the road less traveled' when it comes to holidays.

We try to explore the destination by renting a flat or staying in guest houses / B&Bs rather than hotels or resorts. I really do not see the point in travelling to a foreign country and booking into the Hilton. That I can do right here in Jhb ! We also try eating where the locals eat, because that is where you find the real cuisine of the country. All this should of course take into account health and safety risks.

Anyone ever done this kinf of traveling in Mauritius?

I did this some time ago (I am talking 18 years ago!) and if the situation is still the same Mauritius can be a very cheap holiday (excluding air tickets). For the price of a single night in a top hotel you may be able to live for a couple weeks (food included) in a small flat. Not luxury accommodation, but also not that bad! If you are willing to camp it was in fact free on public beaches…running water supplied.

Worthwhile investigating if you want to really experience the island.

Uncle rpm was quite the adventurer it seems ;) :D :p hehe, joking!

Mauritius is very over-rated. The tourist parts are OK, but when I was there last (5 years ago) it was very dirty and not the paradise they portray. The people are lovely though and it was very relaxing, but my point is that you shouldnt get your hopes up about there being beautiful blue beaches and pina coladas served by local tribeswomen. I would rather do Bali again...

I was there 2 months ago. The parts that are not 5 star hotels are seriously 4th world. I wouldn't suggest Mauritius for this type of trip.

A fried just spent 5 weeks in Cambodia and he reckons it was worth every cent. They didn't book hotels up front. They only booked for the night they arrived and the night before they left.

Oh I have no illusions!

I have never really wanted to go to Mauritius. Exactly because of your sentiments. We just wanna do a quick 4/5 day break because the year has been tough workwise.

I have been to Zanzibar, Bali, etc. etc. so Mauritius is just a quick getaway and not my 'ultimate destination' :D

My dad went a few years back. He brought us back some huge sea shells...there is this boat with a glass floor where you can point out the shell you want and then a diver fetches it.

I went couple months ago and plan on going again, but this time I dont want to stay in a hotel. The bungalows and B&Bs are cheap and more fun if you more adventurous!
Mauritius is very much like SA but like 20 years ago. But their real cuisine is crap lol!

My plan exactly. Thanks for confirming that it is indeed an option.

Time for a resurrection...

I'm planning a Mauritius holiday for July.
Anyone know of a good place for package deals (i.e. airfare and accommodation)?

Also, does anyone have recommendations for a hotel?
So far I've considered:
  • Le Meridian
  • Merville Beach
  • Solana Beach
  • Veranda (Grand Baai)
  • Le Victoria

I'd prefer North or West of the island.

EDIT: Budget is approx R18k pp for a 10 night trip including flights.

Speak to Anas for accommodation and activities/tours. Tell him that I referred you - will give you preferential rates.

Definitely do the Quad Biking & the Parasailing.

Don't go to Le Meridien, has not been refurbished since it was built in the 70s and service is terrible. Le Victoria is much better - stayed there for 2 nights in Nov 2014. The North-West is a bit isolated, if you want to do trips on your own. West is a bit more accessible by bus, and closer to the nice sights.

We've always found the Pentravel specials to be good value.

IMHO, Seychelles is much nicer than MU.

If you want an alternative to a beach holiday, consider going to Vietnam - it's cheap, although flying there takes long. Very interesting history, lots of amazing sights, friendly people, and the food is amazing.

We just came back yesterday from honeymoon in Mauritius. We stayed at a hotel called Paradise Cove Hotel in the north. It was beautiful! My husband made all the arrangements, but I know he got a package deal through flight center

I should tell them that Synergy referred me?

South East Asia is just too far for this holiday. Thanks for the heads up on Le Meridian!

I checked flight centre's website, but they only seem to do 7 day deals. How long was your honeymoon?

Is your husbands name Wynand?

I had the same issue with Flight Centre. Quoted me for 7 days. In that particular instance Holiday Factory was providing Flight Centre with the booking.

So, I emailed Holiday Factory, got a quote for 10 days. Flight Centre then processed the booking for 10 days on presentation of the quote.

If you looking for the hotel vibes, definitely take the all inclusive deals, if you don't you will be spending a #$O!K%$O!#%K load of money on food + drinks. The hotels really rip you off.

I can't comment on any of the hotels exactly as i haven't had the need to go to any.
Grand Baie - Not really the place for the long, big white sandy beaches. Lots of tourists. Expensive. Lots of south africans. Good night life. All amenities are there. Main port for going out on trips (snorkelling, diving, cat trips, island trips etc.)

Flic En Flac - Looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong white sandy beaches, nice nightlife along the beach, haven't spent much time there (hopefully moving there in a month :D) but from what i have, its really nice. The beach and sunsets here are incredible. Also much more accessible to the more natural nature side of the island (down south) with Le Morne, Black river gorge, quad biking, casela (zip lining + Canyon swings in the forests).

Tamarin (West coast, like 10 min south of FeF) - Wouldn't really recommend it, the sea has destroyed lots of the beaches. Tourists aplenty. very meh imo.

I'll upload some photos of the respective places so you can get a feel

Casela - that reminds me - they have lion cub petting.

My wife was giving me flack, that I'm coming from South Africa to pet lion cubs in Mauritius:D

In Winter?

Bleh...

Recif Attitude. Brilliant place 3 star but definitely 4 star . Done through holiday factory . 10 night stay half board . North west . It's a small hotel 40 rooms but beach at door step . Ask for seafront room . What you pay and get cannot compare. Thus for your budget can definitely do it paid 32000 for two people incl flights pick up ect
