Portugal's economic woes are akin to SA. People simply cannot afford to pay a few grand a month to drive on what was once a free road.

Compare it to France, where the toll capex costs were only EUR10m, and they hired within the borders to implement and maintain the system - it's a success. E-tolling can be successful, but not the way it has been implemented in SA...

Alex Van Niekerk had this pissy attitude in his interview with John Robbie. That people in Gauteng can afford to pay so they must stfu and pay. Obviously everyone that uses the highways are top level executives. :rolleyes:

Whatever happens I'm not registering neither my familia. I am in for new experiences and would like this to happen...maybe not...but if it does I am sure there will be ample legal help out there!.
 
I am looking at it this way: Since taxis and all government employees will be exempt from tolling, they will not use secondary roads anymore, as it will be a lot more efficient to travel on highways. We, the disobedient folk, will continue getting to work on secondary roads and will at least not have to content with traffic congestion.

The few morons who will buy e-tags are most likely the same people who are incapable of driving in morning traffic and dealing with traffic lights, circles and those complex slipways and yield-signs - so even less issues in traffic.

Yes, all e-road users (other than those gazetted) are obligated to pay toll, including e-road users with motorcycle. A special bracket is available to fit an e-tag onto a motorcycle from all Customer Service Centres.

What happens to visitors from other Provinces or Countries?

Road users can register for e-toll by phoning the e-toll Call Centre (0800 SANRAL (726 725)), by visiting the e-toll Website www.sanral.co.za or through your nearest e-toll Customer Service Centre. Road signage will be erected along the Gauteng e-road that will advise road users that they are travelling on a tolled road. Visitors or infrequent Gauteng e-road users that choose not to have an e-tag, can register their e-toll Account by making use of their Vehicle Licence Plate Number, or purchase a day-pass.

My neighbour's sister (58 years old) and lives in Bapsfontein and does not have a computer or internet (she works in a butcher's shop as a book-keeper) is convinced that unless she buys a substantial pre-paid toll card (she is talking about R1000) she will be arrested and thrown into a cell with some undesirables

Such is the effect of SANRAL's propaganda on people who are not the sharpest knives in the drawer that they would rather err on the side of paying too much. She is also terribly bothered that they will let her know when it is time to pay some more. Notwithstanding the fact that she paid R1000 for her e-toll, she spent several hours with a map trying to figure a way to avoid the toll plazas to get from her home to the shop. I told her that she is being silly, but she is working herself into a state about this. Her boss isn't much help either. Being Portugese his command of English is not good

It's not necessarily a SANRAL scare tactic though. Lived most of my life in these little towns and it seems to be very much a small-town thing (or "salt-of-the-earth" type people with a very small paradigm of life in general).
They tend to spread all kinds of fearmongering crap, horror stories about people being thrown in jail and raped, some of which are true, most of which are exaggerated and all of which are seen as the norm.
Have lots of family member who are like that.
 
Seems emergency vehicles, fire engines, ambulances are not exempt either - so hope they don't take the long route to avoid the costs.

I don't know how effective those will be during the day?

I have zero intentions of paying a single cent to these tolls. Even if it means using certain methods to go around the tolls. I thought about this and they say two wrong don't make a right. I'm sorry but SANRAL and the Government, clearly don't give a rats ass about its' citizens and this whole scam is only to enrich themselves. I, will not entertain that in any shape or form.

Anyone who buys tags or pays the tolls - you are part of the problem. Simple.
 
It's simple really for me.. i just won't use it. if it takes me longer to get somewhere it has to be factored into costs for company etc

End of the day the ANC is hoping people will just use it and pay as per usual typical SA attitude but i think they have gone too far tolling highways like they want to now... paying R136 for driving from one end of midrand to the other after discounted = wtf. Govt will be forced to upgrade secondary roads if usage goes up and accidents increase as a result.

The problem with that is that a registered letter sent to your legal address is deemed delivered after a certain period whether you received it or not.

That's why the last bill they signed is the cross-border policing act. I doubt very much that it's cross provincial border, but rather national borders. So there will probably be checks at the border posts.

Yeah, unfortunately the fat cheque that you will receive at the end of your several year long legal battle won't be able to cure the aids you picked up in prison.
