I for one will be using alternative routes as much as I can. I think we need to consider that the alternative routes, although longer and congested, will also play an essential role in the downfall of the e-toll. If there is less traffic on the highways, it will mean less transactions, which in turn means less money for the highways. Or at least, that is what I gathered from the article on the Portuguese toll situation. A combination of the two will certainly make the entire system unworkable.

Problem is the upkeep of side roads. They WONT fix potholes, they WONT repair robots that are out and people will be FORCED to use the N1 again

Even if the current traffic on the highway stays the same, and those people ALL pay. They still won't be able to afford it.

I imagine once the etolling starts, even more people will find a way to use the Gautrain.

Correct, perhaps that is their end goal?

Make no mistake that many people will use alternatives to the highway.

At $350 its a bit steep, Im thinking DIY, I am sure I can build something similar...

To make it look as authentic as possible ill drill out the existing pop rivets on my current numberplate and glue back the pop rivet heads once the mechanism is attached.

This will hide my numberplate perfectly for when I have those "frequent photo sessions" during "car shows" :p

Don't forget, there are going to be etoll enforcement vehicles on the freeways. You can bet that when a car without plates goes under a gantry these ****ers will swoop on you and make your life hell.

Who says I won't have plates on?

I won't hide my plates at all. That would be too obvious.
 
Ill only be traveling through 2 gantries per day, so for that reason I can simply flip my plate 5 seconds before the gantry, and flip it back after...

As far as the reverse plate I'm thinking of displaying a blank plate so there will be no poor unsuspecting victim with a huge bill. Also, if you get caught they cant exactly charge you for previous bills as there is no sure way to identify your car?

As far as legality goes, I am pretty sure it falls in the same category as using a radar/lazer jammer. Its legal to own, as long as they don't catch you using it. For that reason I will make sure that the car looks 100% stock from the outside.
 
The gantries will raise an alert when a car with no plates goes through, I'm sure.

Put a patrol car at the next gantry, radio a description of the suspect car and wait.

I doubt they will do that, but lets wait and see. I rate there will be hundreds of people hiding, removing, modifying and obscuring their numberplates to avoid payment every single day.

Imagine the type of manpower needed 24h per day to pull these cars off the road if there is (for example) 10 cars an hour per gantry with some type of numberplate infraction?

Impossible to control IMHO
