I'm with you on that.

Sooo... any official date about when start this tolling? Don't they have to give due warning before it turns on? (they said before xmas right and that is quickly apporaching)
 
Good point, things have gone very quiet after the in your face billboards :p

Only partly... his greed has managed to keep him on board this long, he was no doubt licking his chops at the prospects of cash flowing in, but the ineptitude of SANRAL and the DoT has maybe highlighted for him that this ship is never going to leave port and will most likely just sink at the dockside. So in order to save his name from being associated with this mess, he has jumped ship. Remember, he is probably also getting pestered by Kapsch and the other shareholders on the other side of the Mediterranean sea, and that must be a major pain in his backside. You can imagine the constant flow of e-mails and texts.... "When are we going to get our Millions????"
 
Anyone who thinks these gantries arent gonna be switched on are delusional. The ANC has made it clear that public oppression is the way to go and the Zanufication of South Africa as someone else put it, is well on track.

It's not a toll gantry. It was an illegal Advertising frame that was cut down by the authorities in Nairobi, Kenya.
Has nothing to do with tolling and is not even in South Africa.

1) Our toll gantries are constructed on highways on top of fairly large concrete foundations.
2) The metal is very thick and there are many legs to the gantries - on both sides of a busy highway.
3) There is no power source nearby so a generator or gas powered cutting blade would be needed.
4) It would take several hours and several blades to complete the cutting work.
5) You can be assured that such a cutting process would generate a fair amount of sparks, dust and noise. This would draw prompt attention.
6) The cameras on the gantries are already operational as well as the security cameras.
7) Once power is lost on a gantry a team would no doubt be dispatched promptly as well, SANRAL is probably well aware of the threat.
8) Any sabotage to a gantry will result in fairly serious criminal and civil penalties.
9) We should not be seen to be promoting vandalism in any way shape or form as this only undermines our own cause.
10) Criminals and metal thieves do not usually scan facebook or e-mails looking for places to rob, they just use their own eyes.

ergo... chances of this actually happening to a Toll Gantry in SA? Almost zero.
If it was a possibility, then you would see a lot more signage and steel being stolen along highways.

The e-toll tariffs where published in the government gazette on the 9th October 2013.
The public has 30 days for comment where after it will take a couple of weeks for SANRAL to go live.
So the e-tolling could go live towards the end of November 2013.

I have heard that camera CCD and CMOS sensors are damaged by lazers. :D

The image of pulling down a gantry is a symbol for bringing down an oppressive government.
