Hi guys I've just recently dropped out of my 3rd year studies towards a BEng Mechanical degree, to pursue my passion for software development. I've been admitted for a Computer Science and Informatics degree at UJ for 2016 and would like to get some industry insight for the remainder of the year. Do you guys know of any companies that are open for volunteers around joburg or in the westrand ?

Good luck with that.

I'm not too sure which companies want someone with 0 experience or qualifications poking around their code...

I don't think you will get a company willing to do that, do you perhaps know/ can you program with atleast one programming language? if not then forget it, if yes then there might be something you can find (Rarely). Why did you drop out of that degree on the 3rd year? I hope it's not a 3 year degree if it is then it's not a wise move that you took.

Why not work on some stuff yourself to build a portfolio? You'll have a better chance after that.

You were a year and half away from completing Beng Mech and you dropped out for a new degree?
Why not just finish and do dev work on the side to get the knowledge. Most places will still take you as a dev with BEng and some knowledge.

This as well.

Finish the degree then get some programming diplomas or certificates or whatever behind your name as well.

Having a bsc will get you a nice foot in the door for any programming gig.

Life is just not a joyfull thing if you're not following ur passion....

Yes. The fact that he dropped out at such a late stage isnt going to sit well with many prospective employers.
True, but if the op is serious it can only get better from here.

As for doing something in the remainder of the year, I like this advice because it will test whether you have some passion

You have made the biggest mistake. It's your final year, why did you drop out?
I'm currently doing my final year in Electrical (majoring in computer systems) and I'm really battling to get into the programming field. Rather get back in there and complete your qualification. Work hard and dream big.
If programming is your passion get into Mechatronics. Mechanics, Electronics and Programming. You can't go wrong.

Oddly enough, engineering graduates are the candidate of choice in IT, especially in European finance.

I agree. But I guess it boils down to the type of job you're applying for. But in KwaZulu-Natal, there aren't many Software Dev companies in Durban.
Nowadays, companies are not looking for anyone who doesn't have a qualification (even if you're studying). This is the point I was trying to bring up. They want to see that N Dip or BSc next to your name.

Build yourself a portfolio so long. I was in the position you are in. Look at sights like freelancer.com and elance.com. I did the same thing for web development.
