How old is it?Our VW has held it's value far beyond what our Subaru has. Not hi-jacked yet either![]()

Who drives a (turbo) performance vehicle for 15 years these days? Colleague of mine drives a 320i that he bought a year ago. He can't even get his settlement amount out of selling it now. I wouldn't keep that for 15 years either, or any higher end modern vehicle. If driven long enough the resale value is completely negligible. The reason why VW is perceived to have a high resale value is people trade them in sooner to avoid the issues you get from owning them in the long run. If you keep one for 15 years it will not fetch any more or less than other cars of the same age and mileage.

If you kept it for a proper period of time, say 15 years, you would not have that difference. What does that mean? I means that VW is no better than any other car in the long run.
I got R30k trade in for a entry level 14 year old Astra with 265,000km, Golf 4 would have got the same.

Considering I paid R100k for it and got a decades worth of motoring at from it the R70k depreciation is extremely good. The vast majority of people tend to waste money, not save enough, drive VW too often and are, well the vast majority. Some people are in the small upper elite with some sense.Besides the fact that your statement is out of touch with reality. The vast majority of people are not holding onto a car for 15 years and the majority is what sets the trend.

More the the case in point, I know people that drive Mercs for much longer and end up in the same situation I did. Just because you have a motor company on your payroll does mean they love you.Wait, you think opel drivers are in the small upper elite?
Lol, there are 20 year old Toyotas going for more than that...
Not bad, but over my Citigolf's lifetime (to date), the first five years had a net depreciation of about 9%, with an additional 38% over the next 10 years - total depreciation = R22k. I sold it for R30 000. My current car has already seen 66% depreciation over its first 7 years (which reminds me to thank the previous owner for taking the initial knock).Considering I paid R100k for it and got a decades worth of motoring at from it the R70k depreciation is extremely good.
