If driven long enough the resale value is completely negligible. The reason why VW is perceived to have a high resale value is people trade them in sooner to avoid the issues you get from owning them in the long run. If you keep one for 15 years it will not fetch any more or less than other cars of the same age and mileage.
Who drives a (turbo) performance vehicle for 15 years these days? Colleague of mine drives a 320i that he bought a year ago. He can't even get his settlement amount out of selling it now. I wouldn't keep that for 15 years either, or any higher end modern vehicle.

I plan to do exactly that.

Well probably not 15 years, but definitely 10 years at least.

I bought it for R199 000 as it was just over 3 years old (2008 model at the end of 2011) and it's worth about R160 000 now.

Will probably still fetch R100k in 2018 when it's 10 years old which means a 50% loss in total or 5% per year which isn't really all that bad.

Had I bought it new though...I would be crying now I'm sure.

*****

I joke about Hijackings this as my wife drives straight into the protests on the N2 and has to 4x4 that GTI to the other side of the highway to get away.

If you kept it for a proper period of time, say 15 years, you would not have that difference. What does that mean? I means that VW is no better than any other car in the long run.

You do know that there's an easier and quicker way to do this. Just compare the price of a 15 year old Golf to a 15 year old Astra. But I guess Opiel drivers are used to waiting when their Brakpanmobile inevitably cracks an oil leak...

I got R30k trade in for a entry level 14 year old Astra with 265,000km, Golf 4 would have got the same.

There is a point at which most cars in the same class become worthless.

30k isn't even a value worth considering in the bigger things, you've lost so much money from the original purchase price that the 30k they are paying you really just to keep you smiling.

Besides the fact that your statement is out of touch with reality.

The vast majority of people are not holding onto a car for 15 years and the majority is what sets the trend.

Hi all

Thanks for the responses,

However, in my price bracket, I'm looking to compare the used a200 vs used golf 7 1.4 tsi comfortline dsg with same features i.e leather, pdc, dsg or equivalent, stop start

Considering I paid R100k for it and got a decades worth of motoring at from it the R70k depreciation is extremely good. The vast majority of people tend to waste money, not save enough, drive VW too often and are, well the vast majority. Some people are in the small upper elite with some sense.

Wait, you think opel drivers are in the small upper elite?

What planet are you from?

More the the case in point, I know people that drive Mercs for much longer and end up in the same situation I did. Just because you have a motor company on your payroll does mean they love you.

Not bad, but over my Citigolf's lifetime (to date), the first five years had a net depreciation of about 9%, with an additional 38% over the next 10 years - total depreciation = R22k. I sold it for R30 000. My current car has already seen 66% depreciation over its first 7 years (which reminds me to thank the previous owner for taking the initial knock).

Oh dear dear, VW have certainly achieved their goal, from a basic run around car to making most believe it could be any where near a Mercedes. Is this not why VW actually bought Audi? To have a real premium vehicle?

OP if you into speed, the A250 Sport will do just fine (your choice is the A200 tho, which I assume you not into speed that much), if you need a VAG, get an Audi.

Mercedes also comes with a 6 (yes SIX) years maintenance plan, which not even its competitors are able to match. The price difference gives you a lot more than a GTI. Only benefit of the GTI at this point is speed!

Forgive my disbelief at the Q, it would be like asking between a BMW 3/4 series and some sport version of a Toyota Auris for me.

VW have come a long way sure, but it is no Mercedes, just the thought alone makes my skin crawl.

The merc a200 is almost double the price of a golf with same spec and by no means bad quality. .... used tsi R250k vs used merc R 420-450
