Mercedes CLA

The base models are hideous!! Saw one that had rims that look like those cheap tsw 14" ones you can get at small car dealers. If i had to get one, an AMG styling pack wouldnt be optional. A3 sedan for me. Looks better than the sportback!

Porches are not meant to be resold, you buy a potch because it's an investment Into a beautiful motorcar, that being said you never buy a merc to keep through the ages like you would a porch...

I agree porches are not meant to be resold, seeing as they are a structure affixed to a house.... :)

That floating screen in the interior ruins it for me.

Agreed. It cheapens the whole thing. It looks like an afterthought so they stuck a Garmin wherever there was sort of a little bit of space...

I always saw Porsche as the car you buy when you don't have enough money to buy a real sports car.

lol. Look, I'm not a fanboy of either brand. I just do not understand how Porsche SA get away with linking the warranty to resale through the dealership. It's anti-competitive and I cannot fathom why they have not been reported.

This merc is a beast though; no denying it. But my eyes are set on the Audi S3, even if it is detuned from 225Kw to 201kws for SA petrol...

How long is this Porsche warranty that it even matters?

I've never bought a second hand car that still and a warranty, so this would hardly bother me on a Porsche.

I assume you meant "still had a warranty"?

Which would mean you are hardly in the price range to purchase a Porsche, so I agree it would not bother you.

Depends which model you are referring to. The 911 turbo is still seen as the best all rounder sport car. Very few 'sports cars' make good everyday rides and in this area the Porsche is an exception. In regards to performance, just go look at the specs of the new turbo s compared to the likes of the Lamborghini's and the like. It is right up there with them and in many cases even better.

You get a 3 and 5 year motor plan

I think list price is R674k? And that's for a 2.0 liter turbo with 265KWs that will destroy any Porsche you can get for R100k more...

Boxter S goes for R775K - 232kW - 279 top speed - 5.1s 0-100km/h
CLA 45 AMG - R670K - 265kW - 250 top speed [limited] - 4.6s 0-100km/h

Considering that the Boxter is the entry level I will say not bad. Boxters is in any case what you buy for your wife or if you have a mid-life crisis.

The Boxter is entry level - Boxster S is one above. Look, once again, I have no issue with the Porsche. By all accounts it is an awesome piece of engineering. Just have issues with limitations on reselling it (and yes, many people do want to re-sell it).

need I say more than this?

Porsche Boxter S

R725 000

That Boxter in the pic does not cost anywhere near 725k. Try and configure a Porsche and see how much it really costs.

For the car in the pic, you must add

- GT Silver Metallic Paint R 33 900
- Leather seats Carrera Red R 60 570
- Roll-over bar with exterior color paint finish R 7 180
- Wind deflector R 3 810
- 20-inch Carrera Classic wheel R 35 500
- Wheel Caps :D R 2 290

Total R 867 640

And you still don't get many other items that you expect to be standard for a car at that price

Ok, this is getting ridiculous now - over R700k for a 4 cylinder engine. Are you kidding me?

And no, I don't give a monkey that is is the "most powerful 4 cylinder in the world".

What Gaz said. The specific size of the engine matters less to me than what it succeeds in doing. While the A45 in any bodyshape is faster than a good number of competing cars, I would rather have an S3 which is slightly slower but has much better spec levels to the point of making it comedic. I don't want any man made leather in a 600k+ car thanks, and having to pay another 14 to make it proper leather doesn't sit well with me so I'll avoid the Merc. Also, the new S3 with software only pushes out numbers about on the same level as the A45, 450nm and 260+wkw if I'm not mistaken.

If you're willing to go second hand, why not get an old RS3 for a much lower price? The RS3 does actually outperform the A45 in most ways even though its an older model and the 45 is technically just an early entrant to the next gen of super-hatches (which refers to the next RS3 basically, and to the next 1M if there is such a thing). If the old model is about on par or slightly better, what will the new version manage?

The new S3 in SA is around 206kw. IF you want to use software fine, but then you can void your warranty. Im pretty sure you could probably use software on the A45 AMG as well.

As for the RS3, all the reviews and videos I have watched indicate it is not a great car (check out chris harris's multiple reviews on it).
For me, I dont like the interior of the AMG, nor do I care for the ridiculous price tag.

My ideal car would have the new S3 interior on the inside of the m135i.
Having only driven the m135i and not the new S3, I am relying on only reviews of the S3 to compare it to. But, for me, the m135i does things well enough, that I wouldnt bother with the AMG. If it wasnt for its interior, I would say its a no contest

I wouldn't use software or mod a car performance wise in any shape personally, I was simply pointing it out since I know some do enjoy modding. But the problem with the A45 is that I'm sure it's already running very close to the maximum it can achieve without actually swapping out hardware components. I'm not too experienced in the field personally, but that is what I've read as posted by others on various forums.

I don't know how great a car the RS3 is either, I was just trying to state that the A45 doesn't impress me enough to justify the spending, and in that performance range I'd rather have the Audi offering in either the old or upcoming shape.

I do have to agree with you about the the A-class interior, as it does very little for me aesthetically and I would be afraid of that screen breaking off. Is it in danger of doing so? No idea but it really looks like they decided to pritt on an Ipad after learning that all the competing cars have built in screens.

Chris Harris is by far one of the best automotive journalists.

i love his reviews, they should have him on top gear to show those morons how things should be done.

I loved his F40 / F50 review!

and those shirts, they make me laugh

A45 getting its ass whipped by the modified hatch backs already.

It has a good engine, looks horrid(my opinion), nice new entry into the market.
Would I buy one? Nope.

The new S3 has been roaming our streets already, with a few tweaks it will out run the A45 I think, if so, its the better car.

On what basis? Which part of his review stood out for you that you can write it off as "not a good car?"
