Metrofibre has recently finished with their fibre installation in my area , when I checked on their website coverage map , it shows my area is live but when I check on Afrihosts website , the map is still telling me to preorder and that it's not live as yet , any help ?

Hi,

You can signup and once signed up I can place the order manually for you. :)

Metrofibre been having problems recently with packet loss and now a cable break. TBH would rather be on OpenServe at this point.

So when the time finally came where I was called for an ONT installation, they messed up with their scheduling and the contractor did not show up for that scheduled installation. This was for a Friday. I called almost every day following that escalating and demanding that they come and complete the installation since it had already been arranged so I felt I was owed a quick resolution. I was never rude, just persistent. They came around the following Friday and judging by the small talk I had with the contractor, I think MetroFibre asked him really nicely to tend to me ASAP so that I could shut the hell up.

I wouldn't put too much faith in them to resolve your matter on their own time, at least not if you want to be connected any time soon. I had issues with arranging both the TP and ONT because of their pretty useless installations department (it's a harsh judgement based on two appointments but that's just my experience). If I were you I would push them as much as you can with your free time. I don't believe they have any reps on here btw.

So after making some boots to get MFN's attention they sent someone on Monday to install the ONT.
Wish I didn't have to resolve to making some noise but phoning their support line got me nowhere. Luckily it's up and running now.

But it's been a bumpy one so far.
I'm aware of the reported issues affecting Pretoria North but I'm very much looking forward to it being sorted.
I'm have a 300/300 connection with Mind The Speed but some speedtests fail completely, upload speeds are often between 90-200mbps so pfsense's CodelQ can't do its thing and I get disconnected from online games a minimum of 3 times per hour like clockwork.

I'm still just so happy I'm rid of Rain now

Signed up for 300mbps. MFN direct
Pretty happy with the results. Note this is via wifi, speed is more or less the same on cable just ping is 1

Works for me
Wait until you do an upgrade. It takes 20 phonecalls, 3 emails, numerous tests, 5x rebooting ONT, rebooting firewall (interface reset apparently not enough), 5 speedtest screenshots (got to be from a copper connected laptop), escalation to director level and eventually a 3-way conference call before they finally manage to do it right.

Why are you dealing with MF for an upgrade though, isn't your ISP supposed to deal with this?
What else should an ISP do when MF's infrastructure isn't providing the desired (promised and paid for) speed upgrade?

I feel your pain.
It does seem MFN's help desk is a bit "basic".

Seems I'm lucky, went from 50Mbps to new ISP at 25Mbps, then to 100Mbps and now 200Mbps - no issues.
In 18 months, only issues 2 issues so far:
  • Thieves mistook fibre for copper and stole some cable (took a day to reconnect)
  • ISP had congestion on the back-haul (took a while to resolve)

Just constant packet loss come evenings with Metro Fibre.
I am thinking to try go over to Openserve

They should resolve this for you?
Well, they point fingers it's Metro Fibre and now you say it's Home Connect.

During the day there is no packet loss. Come night time its packet loss.

Care to explain?
