Which ISP are you using on the MFN Network?

asking for a friend...

with MWEb on Metrofiber, do they run PPPoE ? ie can I configure a pfSense as my edge router and go directly into the MetroFiber ONT ?

Only MetroFibre ISP provides internet directly on the ONT. If it's Open Access the ISP provides PPPoE or DHCP.

ok so any ISP on top of Metrofiber will be using PPPoE...

I want not planning on internet directly on the ONT, question was using pfSense directly onto the ONT, pfSense configured with PPPoE credentials, instead of the ISP supplied router.

Yes it will be either PPPoE or DHCP but yes you will be able to use your own router if you go with an Open Access ISP and pick Metro Fibre as the FNO.

well we know Metrofiber is a open network...
question is would MWEb (as ISP) allow it... as they shipped the router to client... the client never entered any credentials onto the router so worried that they pre configured it and potential MAC address locked it to the client. (Now I know I can MAC address close onto the pfSense....)

Need someone thats with MWeb on Metrofiber to comment that's done this, lets not comment how the tech generally works.

Still waiting for word on whether speed will be bumped or not. Somehow I did have 500/500 for like 3 days but then got cut to 250/250 for some reason. ISP never did confirm whether they were bumping existing clients or not but pricing for new customers reflects 500/500 at the old 200/200 price.

Get Level-7 to log a ticket for the line to be re-provisioned. There is an issue with the 500/500 and 1000/250 profiles on calix ONT's

Anyone else having high latency during peak times?
Really not good for for gaming having 150ms ping times.
Started on 27th April.
I think MFN "fixed" a fault in our area by moving another street onto our GPON POS (passive optical splitter)
This is on MWEB+MetroFibre.

I have logged a call with MWEB - still waiting for feedback.

EDIT1: AFAIK, this issue is NOT related to the speed upgrades.
Seems to be caused by a repair in my suburb conducted ~26 April.

EDIT2: 4 May 2022 19:11pm
Good news, seems the ping/latency during peak issue has been resolved:

Hi system32

Also experiencing high average latency and reduced speeds during peak hours (6pm - 10pm). I'm located in Durban. Issue reported numerous times to both MWEB and MFN since March when the fibre was activated but still issue continues.

Thanks, however they never confirmed whether they are bumping their clients up or not? At first they said they were not aware of the upgrades and then they said it was still a "process in the making"...

I'm on MetroFibre + MWEB.
I have a Calix 803 ONT - this is a dumb ONT
Change from the WR7010v2 MWEB router to an RPI4 as my edge router - running Debian 11.

Just get the credentials from the existing router or from MWEB site and configure pppoe on RPI4.

Code:
root@rpi4:/etc/ppp/peers# ls -l
-rw-r----- 1 root dip  788 Jun  2 12:03 mweb-provider
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root dip   13 Feb 10 01:26 provider -> mweb-provider

root@rpi4:/etc/ppp/peers# cat provider
# ppp provider file for mweb
# /etc/ppp/peers/provider -> mweb-provider # default provider

user "55555555" # "[email protected]" - not work
noipdefault # peer will have to supply the local IP address
debug                  # enable debug
lcp-echo-interval 20 # send LCP echo-request to check link OK
lcp-echo-failure 3     # fails
persist # try to reopen the connection
maxfail 0 # Terminate after maxfail connection attempts. Default=10. 0=no limit
noauth # Do not require the peer to authenticate itself
mtu 1492 # mtu 1492 is the default
noipv6                 # Disable ipv6 - not available on MWEB

plugin rp-pppoe.so eth0.16

root@rpi4:/etc/ppp/ip-up.d# cat 100-ppp-user-script
#!/bin/sh

# Set the METRIC and MTU
# variables $PPP_REMOTE $PPP_IFACE are set by ip-up

MTU=1492
METRIC=113

echo "$(date): $0"

# set ppp0 metric lower than LTE standby
/usr/sbin/ifmetric $PPP_IFACE $METRIC

# I have an LTE standby, so the Fibre metric lower than LTE
# set the MTU for the route
ip route add default via $PPP_REMOTE dev $PPP_IFACE metric $METRIC mtu $MTU

# clamp-mss done in nftables
#-    iptables -I FORWARD -o ppp0 -p tcp --tcp-flags SYN,RST SYN -j TCPMSS --clamp-mss-to-pmtu
Remember to configure /etc/ppp/pap-secrets
use pon/poff/plog to connect/disconnect/view logs

EDIT: I've used 4 different PPPoE devices - MWEB WR7010v2, TP-Link EC230-G1, 2 x RPI4 and sometimes 2 devices via hub - so not MAC locked.

Mine has resolved itself and is fine for the last two weeks - see image below:

MWEB has updated prices for MetroFibre on their website for 1 July 2022:
  • 20/20Mbps R489pm
  • 50/50Mbps R679pm
  • 100/100Mbps R799pm
  • 200/200Mbps R979pm
  • 500/500Mbps R1,199pm
  • 1Gbps/250Mbps R1,699pm
NOTE: The speed bump & pricing is only effective from 1 July 2022.
Anyone on MWEB had the speed bump?
I'm still waiting...

Hi,

I'm also getting high average latency and reduced speeds during peak hours (6pm - 10pm). I'm located in Glenwood. Accelerit and MFN.

Ok, so got confirmation that I was "automatically upgraded" to 500/500 but still only seeing 250/250. I've logged a ticket now for this... Would have been nice if they informed people, especially those who enquired about the Metrofibre line speed upgrades. :rolleyes:
