Microsoft and Apple rivalry heats up​

At a virtual product launch in November for Apple’s Mac reboot, actor John Hodgman appeared in a nerdy, ill-fitting suit before a white backdrop.

“Stop, hang on, wait, one more thing, hi, I’m a PC,” he said, reprising the popular Mac vs. PC television commercials of a decade ago that not so subtly telegraphed the idea that Apple was cool and Microsoft wasn’t.

The event was held to let Mac fans know the new machines were getting a processor with more sizzle. But the subtext was unmistakable: Apple Inc.’s old rivalry with Microsoft Corp. was back.
 
Apple's M1 chip ARM chip is a game changer. Caught all the others napping. Little wonder Mac sales doubled in the last quarter. Qualcomm's will have to catch up with its ARM chip for laptops. Not sure if Microsoft is developing its own ARM based chip. Not sure how Intel will respond.

Nope, that's just the hype. I had two MacBook Air M1s that I sent back for various issues. Frozen pointer in presentations and excessive hard drive usage due to the limited amount of RAM. The M2 will address the issues, hopefully.

Weird how they're back to RISC architecture 15yrs after switching to intel. CPUs are indeed impressive.

Is that an issue related to the cpu though?
 
Very happy with my M1 MBA.

I think this round has really won over a lot of MS users, here and internationally

Won't make such a bold statement.
Surface. That's where MS competes against the MBA.

I wouldn't use an Apple device, if I got it for free. I've never seen the value in terms of cost. MS gives me value for my investments each month and every day.
Windows is where I'm at and will always be. Linux is second. MAC isn't anywhere.

I agree. I got the M1 MBA too. It's my first macOS device after a lifetime with Windows.

What an awesome machine. macOS is better for getting work done than Windows imo. I doubt I'll ever touch Windows again for anything other than gaming.

I'm basing it upon the numerous Reddit threads of new Mac users that came over from Windows, which seem plentiful in and of itself.

This is my first Apple product, and it is perfect for my needs, however, it won't be for everyone. I don't game anymore, and all the apps that I need are available on macOS.

I've never tried a Surface, but I believe they are highly regarded in some circles.

I've seen people here make the switch to Apple. I've also read posts where people moved back to Windows. It depends what the requirements are.

I recall a post recently where someone loaded Linux on their Macbook, because the latest edition of MacOS tanked the machine. Causing it to be unusable.

I've got personal experience where iPhones were rendered useless, just because the IOS upgrades weren't possible. Nothing could be installed like WhatsApp etc. This was a few years ago.

Their software is kak expensive too.
Not just what they develop. Third party software for Apple systems cost double the price as I've seen compared to Windows.

Not to forget the jailbreak days. Where people hacked their iPads and iPhones just to unlock features that should be usable by default.

I'm not downplaying that Apple devices are useful to some people. My issue is that it is more of a status symbol than a necessity. To give an example. I worked for a place that couldn't afford staff salaries, but they splurged almost 100K on new Apple hardware. I fkd off and resigned.

Surface doesn’t complete well against even an mba. Its more expensive and slower…
 
In both os's you are the product and have little control over what it does with your information. I'd rather not use either when I have a choice.

Doesn't really matter.
Any beefy laptop with Windows competes perfectly fine. Would be cheaper to buy too.
