Microsoft will replace Edge with Chrome-based browser for Windows 10 - Report

What a waste of human resources. They could focus on internal quality control instead.

According to the report, this new browser is code-named “Anaheim” and will replace Microsoft Edge as the default browser for Windows 10.

Another Mickey Mouse browser from Microshaft?

I thought Edge had potential, but obviously that didn't end up meaning anything. I'm happy to see Edge discontinued if only because it renders almost as poorly as IE and is a POS to accommodate for websites.

If only MS would update every OS they've ever released to cripple IE, with a prompt to choose another browser. That would be the best day of my life.

It is likely that the new browser will inherit the best of Edge’s UX design. You know, information from all of that user data they mined @sajunky will be more clued up :p

Hide your kids and hide your RAM cause Chrome gonna be the only browser at the end of the day.

I hope the new browser keeps the perks of using edge such as proper 1080p and 4k streaming. Google chrome is still the best for everyday usage but not good for streaming as it only supports 720p streaming

1080p most definitely works in Chrome? I think you're referring to Netflix. I've seen an extension called Netflix 1080p that claims to allow 1080p quality - haven't tried it though.

I think you're right. It's a DRM thing. Chrome does up to 4K in YouTube.

I use my very old laptop at work, it use for sending emails and browsing Mybb. The specs windows 7: cpu Intel Celeron M 380, ram 1.00GB Single-Channel DDR2 @ 266MHz. I'm using Vivaldi browser, it's base on the Blink Engine (Chromium). Vavaldi runs fast and smooth, use 200mb to 300mb ram. Just because Microsoft use a Chromium base engine does not make it a Chrome clone and memory hog. At home a use Chrome my pc has 14gb ram and laptop 6gb ram and both run multiple tabs easily. Chrome will never be the only browser, there is always gaps in the market that is unprofitable to Google but profitable to companies like Vavaldi.

So here goes. One lonely voice in this pool of hatred.
I have used MS Edge exclusively, with occasional use of IE Explora when required. Chrome on mobile devices.
I like the simplicity of MS Edge. I like the simplicity of it settings.
I can not case what you are on about its rendering capabilities or any of the other so called reasons why none of you even try and use it.
For me it will be a sad day when MS Edge is replaced.

The only reason you might not have noticed rendering issues is due to developers painstakingly ensuring that to be the case. I can assure you that Edge rendering is a pain in the ass. Using Edge and IE makes you every web developers worst nightmare.

I don't think anyone has claimed to not have used it. Obviously most of us were curious about the browser and would have used it at some point. When I tried, the selection of extensions was a dealbreaker, the inability to remember zoom preferences per domain was a dealbreaker and sync between the desktop and mobile Edge apps was broken.

There are only 3 reasons left for using IE. And they are all related to large corporates who have not updated their systems so that other browsers can be used. Notably, SARS is the one we all have a problem with but quite a few banks still cling to IE for some of their services.

Yes, the issue is NOT MS Edge's rendering ability but the fact that developers don't want to clean up their software to adhere to the standards.
I have no hassles with the sites I access using MS, not this forum,(except for its own bunch of bugs), The banking sites I access on a daily basis ( except for some issues on Standard Bank where only IE works), and all the other sites. They all work. SARS IS by far the most irritating one of them all, and that is not an MS Edge issue anyway.

As to the other matters you mention, there are now plenty of Apps and extensions available, too many in fact I make very little use of extensions. There is pretty much no need for 99% of extensions anyway. One only finds that out when you stop using them and see that everything works just fine without them.

And I deliberately don't sync across devices. I don't see the purpose. I prefer my devices to operate independently of each other.

But leave that as it may. I have done what I set out to do, and that is, highlight that MS Edge works fine. There is nothing wrong with it and me for one will be rather disappointed if MS does replace it. IF only because of the pain we will all go through while we get to beta test the replacement before they get it right again.

You're mistaken. The issue is not developers' unwillingness to 'clean up their software' and it is especially not a lack of adhering to standards. The main issue is that MS browsers don't adhere to the cutting edge standards used by Chrome and Firefox. It is not uncommon for half of the CSS for any given website to be exceptions for MS browsers, and that's the easy stuff.

IE and Edge make life miserable for web developers. That's a simple fact. Seeing the back of those browsers will be a godsend for web development the world over.

Your lack of a need for cross-platform sync doesn't change how critically important such functionality is. I am aware of how many Edge extensions currently exist - quantity doesn't overcome quality. It is absolutely not the case that you can simply stop using extensions to discover you never needed them. Doing without Feeder.co alone would drive me up the wall, as it lets me check the headlines of over a dozen sites in barely a minute.

Not for me, I really tried to like it, but there were too many nagging issues, main gripe was mine's settings wouldn't stick ie. update something in settings, restart browser, updates gone.
New installation, right out the box, that I've paid money for 'cos I needed better than Home edition that the laptop came configured with.
Go on, google how many people with the same problem since when win 10 first appeared still no solution.

WTF has time to try & sort out basic crap like this?

For example, not Edge related, but new win 10 desktop at work: take a screenshot, save to disk, double click to view photo viewer reports 'app didn't start'..

Easily fixable I suppose but seriously? Come the f**k on..

I find Firefox the most stable browser lately. I use chrome and Firefox but lots of times run into issues with Crome especially on web frontends on appliances. Firefox always works with no issues.
