Er, what are you on about? Have you been sniffing the smoke emanating from your head? Sounds to me like your issues are more deeply routed in race rather than your pocket...

If she was WHITE, I would have said that she was STUPID, a BIMBO, DAFT, an IDIOT.....

You - DJK, are the one with RACIST ISSUES. ;)

What about the fact that she stole from me? Why is that ignored? She abused my father. I'm sure that you, DJK, would simply justify it by saying that he was old-skool and that he deserved it. Who's the racist now?

Edit: - once a @%# gain: Let's not forget..... a DUMB BLONDE

Yes certainly - as has been evidenced by this thread, I'm the very ethos of racism.

Anyways, lets put that one to bed now - you've proved my point enough already...

I'm glad that you're admitting that you're a racist.

ROFL. You're like a pissed off motorist, floeking all and sundry in the hope of getting some response out of them, with some warped sense of self-achievement thereafter.

Chap, you need a biscuit...

well, my maid comes in twice a week and gets paid R1600 per month. so lets say she comes in 9 times every month, then that equates to R177 per day.

she also eats breakfast and lunch from my household stock, so i think her total cost to household, if you will, is closer to R200 per day. not bad, me thinks.

Have a new maid.

Works every 2nd Friday.
I pay mine R150 a day.
From 08:30 to around 15:30.

Paid the previous maid R200 a day.

Its all about supply and demand. Too much unskilled labour = low pay. Simple is it not?

Not quite. I'd rather pay a premium to ensure that my domestic worker doesn't feel inclined to help herself to my goods. Performance and honesty are directly related to what you pay them imo...

I'm buying a house and I'm weighing up the pros and cons of employing a domestic worker.
My biggest worry is finding someone that doesn't steal and doesn't help criminals to rob my house.
I refuse to employ someone who's dishonest.

I figure that R125 per day is fair pay. That would equate to R2750 per month excluding weekends.
Sure that's not a fantastic salary but it's not bad for manual unskilled labour.

If it's going to cost me more than R500 per month to have my house cleaned once per week I'll rather do it myself and spend the money on hobbies during the weekend.
That way I have peace of mind that no one knows what I have in my house, no one has spare keys to my house and no one knows my movements.
Domestic workers are a serious security risk especially if you fire them (even if it's on valid grounds).

This thread interests me. I have not read all the posts though.

We pay R1300 per month for 3 days a week but allow our DW to leave when she decides she is done. In 4 years she has never abused this arrangement. I also budget to save each month so that in December I can give her 3 cheques (R1300 salary plus R2600 bonus) but never tell her this.

Does anyone have pension / retirement / medical aid schemes / other for their DWs?

I will not hire a domestic worker until I can afford to pay one at least R200 a day.

I believe that the domestic needs to get a respectable salary otherwise I will be the victim of theft and other shenanegans simply because the domestic worker will be enticed into doing such stuff by others whom she mingles with.

This also unfortunately means that I have to turn away desperate people who knock on my door looking for a domestic job, simply because I know that they will not be happy with the pittance that I can pay them at the moment.

The entire jobless sector seems to have raised their expectation levels so high that I cannot help them.

So be it.

If the combination of your actual payment and bartering equates to R200/day, then why not just pay her R200/day in cash instead. You're not out of pocket any more than you were before because she will no longer be using your goods/facilities and I'm pretty sure she'd be a lot happier.

They'll just take stuff anyway ;) If he ups to R200.00p/m .... I'm pretty sure he'll still find R50-R100 worth of stuff vanishing per day.

Yes. My 2 domestic workers each have a pension fund and a hospital plan which I pay for...

Thats certainly very noble but also I suspect out of most people's affordability bracket.

Please answer me this.

If you had to choose between not employing anybody or employing somebody but not paying them well,

a)which would you choose
b)which do you think the fictional employee would choose?

I haven't had an issue with theft or any other form of dishonesty since being able to pay my maid a decent salary. If she wants something extra, she'll ask instead of helping herself...

Far too vague a question, but I'll answer within the context of the numbers thrown around in this thread so far. At R85 per day, I wouldn't employ a domestic worker. Especially if that includes transport. I don't separate personal employment with that of a company for example, and I would rather pay a premium for quality than a pittance for unhappiness.

Of course the domestic would rather choose to be employed at a minimal rate than not at all, stands to reason, however just because her benchmark is circumstantially low, doesn't mean one should take advantage of that. My gripe is more that the poster earlier in the thread stated that his domestic costs him R200/day, yet only pays her R85/day. Well just pay her the R200/day then and let her do with her money as she sees fit.

It's an interesting dilemma you propose, however I wouldn't feel comfortable paying someone R10 an hour, especially when the security risks are attached to a domestic worker.

Those East European pole dancer / au pairs still working for you?

LOL. You got me. Now the wenches want passports as well and I can only marry one of them. You interested in a Yugoslavian? :D

In the income bracket we're posting about I'm not sure that the amount paid has anything to do with the probability of your employee stealing from you.

My domestic worker makes ends meet on R2200 per month total income and is completely honest. Even when her other job told her they couldn't afford her anymore and she was without a second job for 2 months she didn't steal and never asked for extra cash.

My view is that what you pay people is not the major factor in determining whether or not they will steal from you. Their background, culture and personality play a bigger role in my view.
