Mission Impossible : Getting ADSL into a small town.

Currently living in a small town called Steynsrun where only 56k is available. There seems to be no point in waiting for ADSL to someday to become available here by itself so I'm gonna try and make that happen. Somehow...

Gonna need to find out some few things first though. All i know thus far is that the some card needs to be installed on the DSLAM.

*How does one find and identify the DSLAM?
*What card exactly needs to be installed?
*How much does this card cost?
*Who's responsible for installing it?
*What's the requirements for a small town before "telkom takes interest"
in upgrading their infrastructure?
*Where does one find telkom's plans for upgrading their sites?
*How to do it yourself?

The first step is to check if your town is ADSL enabled. Type in a few telephones numbers on this site: https://secure1.telkom.co.za/adslchecker/check.htm

Even if it shows not enabled, phone Telkom and place an order. Insist on an order number even if the operator says you cannot get ADSL in your area. By having an open order on their system, it flags the Network Planning division that there is ADSL demand in your area. No open orders = No demand = No new build.

You cannot build you own DSLAM or buy the cards and the total cost is prohibitive for a single user! 512mbps 'always on' VSAT will be cheaper!

The only way to wake the beast is for more residents/businesses in Steynrus to phone and demand ADSL order numbers.

Open ADSL orders is one of the Network's division's primary targets and they get nailed on the performance assessments if there are open orders due to lack of infrastructure. The operators will try and fob you off about no ADSL, but without an order (or ref no) you are eternally screwed.

BTW make sure you get the operators full name right at the beginning of the call - ask him/her to repeat it and spell it - and write it down for future reference!

I had an not so interesting chat with someone from telkom in august before we installed adsl..

I asked him : when will the upgrades take place? (the upgrade of entry level adsl speeds)

He didn't know anything about any upgrades.

According to him our small town had just been upgraded to have access to adsl.

Some weeks ago a fibre optics technician stopped at our guest house and I talked with him, he said that our town had access to an ancient fibre optic connection that's been there atleast 20 years lol..

Telkom is great

And well informed, we only found out that there was no ADSL available after they physically came to install it.

One thing I did find about Telkom is that just about everyone at the end of the phone is useless, except when it comes to at refering you to another useless number. They seem to got that down to a fine art, they able to make users go through every number.

Anyone know where to find information about VSAT? Everyone that offers it like @lantic has no information regarding the pricing/latency/speed. Might be an alternative.

OMW! I almost forgot about the existence of this little town. I lived there as a kid from 1969-1973. If I remember correctly we lived in Bashee street. Our next-door-neigbour's surname was McDuff, a real Scottsman that played bagpipe music all the time!

There are O/F routes older than 20 years but I doubt if the original fibre is still there. Has probably been replaced over the years!
