Mobile broadband pricing comparison

of course some isps will be able to provide a "better service" but in terms of real ability to provide a decent price plan the majority fail!

What is Telkoms Rollover story then? SAINET rolls over up to 100%...

No roll over for telkom 3G I'm afriad, but if you find you aren't using your entire package, you should downgrade to a lower package and save some money. Else use it up, at 7.2Mbps that's easily done...

[ps. anything that needs months saved up bandwidth should be downloaded through a non-3G source anyway]

The reason why the Advanced packages are slightly expensive than the Standard ones is because of: ...The 7.2 Max Speed

Very few towers actually support this... The 7.2 has nothing to do with speed, it is the name of the product only!

I'm shocked to say this, but I think Telkom may actually be forcing competition and price reductions. Yes, Vodacom's monthly package cost is higher, but with their higher coverage, it may actually be worth it.

On a personal note, I dislike all the cellular providers and think they're a rip off, let's hope this is the start of change though.

Sorry, didn't know 1gig contract prices are exactly the same as 2gig adhoc prices.

These prices refer to contracts that include a modem;)

The Vodacom Standard Packages are incorrect!!!!
1. There's NO DATA CARRY OVER
2. The Out-of-bundle RATES remains at R2 per MB

The reason why the Advanced packages are slightly expensive than the Standard ones is because of: 1) Carry Over, 2) The Out-of bundle rates remains the same as in-bundle, and 3)The 7.2 Max Speed

I stand to be corrected, but you can call 155 to confirm

Basically I think that their revised offer is simply a JOKE!!! RIP-OFF!!!

There is rollover on ALL data packages. This article has the pricing for contract data bundles (not prepaid) - the mentioned OOB rates are correct for the contract bundles ie. < R2/MB depending on bundle.

VODACOM CARRY-OVER RULES: BROADBAND STANDARD & ADVANCED

GENERAL RULES
Carry-over is included for both Broadband Standard & Advanced
Customers will not have to apply for carry-over
Carry-over will be implemented for all customer types from 5 April 2009 onwards
All existing and new Contract (24 month & Top Up) and Bolt-on customers will be eligible for carry-over
Only new Prepaid, Top Up & Ad hoc data bundles bought on 5 April 2009 and thereafter will be eligible for carry-over

Rolling over once does not make it rollover - it is just an extended bundle period.
The normal OOB is still way to high and so are the bundles prices. They are fixing the prices because we are willing to pay.

In short mobile broadband pricing in SA is NGE - Not Good Enough. The coverage and speed might be heavenly, but it is rendered a toasty pile of smelling turd nuggets when you look at the price.

It's shocking that r312.83 for a gb is still the cheapest available.

Agreed. A greed. The prices are outrageous!

What a pathetically sad and sorry story this is.

And reporters have the cheek to talk about a broadband price war.

Why don't they just charge R0.19 per MB and stop being so full of BS?

No rollover, no logging on and trying to sort out your account before it expires, no midnight bank-transfers and swapping sim cards between devices to "top-up".

And, 19c per MB is really expensive.
For example: Windows XP SP3 = 322 MB = R0.19 * 322 = R61.18 for a flipping service pack.

or, to apply modern Internet standards:
Runes of Magic = 3,5GB or 3,657MB = R694 for a FREE game, never mind the service packs.

Greed greed greed greed greed greed greed

What price war?
I am so tired of bending over and taking one for the team.
International websites regard South African internet users as leechers because we dont share enough.
They have very little idea of the hell we go through to afford a little bit of internet access.
And i have to ask whose fault is that?
Vote for the I.P [INTERNET PARTY],and we promise everybody free local and internet at 2c per mb.

I Think its not contractors who is sabotaging Telkom but fed up people.. Who want to show telkom they cant mess with their business/lives and get away with it.

But now telkom is trying to stay ahead of these people by implementing cellular internet.. What a joke.. FU TELKOM

Why cant we have non profit organisations taking CARE of our cable infrastructures ? Why does everything on africa have to be so ****ing corrupted to the core..

Thanks for correction

Vodacom might b more expensive but also bear in mind of the vast coverage they have.

vodacom has vast coverage because they are making a killing.. if there was competition then we would have 4-5 companies each operating in under-serviced areas trying to take their competitor's clients. Now its just 2 companies each with their own customers nicely locked in with 24 month contracts

as with everything else it is the final consumer that is left with no choice but to pay,
whatever the price. If you want it you have to fork out!!

From what I know after telkom sells their golden goose (vodacom), and neotel takes all of their broadband customers, they're going to tank, give it five years, imho

as for the bundle prices being exactly the sam accross SP's, I smell collusion and anyone who thinks there is a price war is living in a dream world

Of course they are not going to allow data carry over, they would be shooting them selves in the foot, and would go bust pretty quick!

Actually, most of the points in Maelly's post were wrong and have been corrected above already.

But to re-iterate:

- BB-S does have roll-over.
- OOB rates on BB-S is as low as 45c/MB

- The reason why BB-A has a different tariff is because it's flat-rated.

It depends on how you look at it.

From Vodacoms point of view that have all ways had data carry over / roll over. The data used to carry over / roll over for 30 days (yes, 30 times) and then it would expire. Recently they extended this to a whole 60 days ! Wow - 60 times roll over / carry over of your data bundle.

From a normal point of view they do not have any roll over or carry over. They simply extended the time window to 60 days.

The whole roll over and carry over concept is flawed. If you look at prepaid airtime for example, you buy it and you can use it as much or as little as you like. You will never loose it (unless your sim is recycled after 6 or 7 months of in activity). They should just do the same for data.
