Mobile TV proves pleasantly surprising

But it's DSTV

Something very cool, but out of principal I wouldn't take it, just because of the company offering it. I don't want the option of watching Back To The Future everywhere I go.

A well written article by someone obviously from Multichoice (No offence Hans). I was hoping for an article about user experience, but this was at least very informative. Maybe it’s a novelty now, using mine at work for the last two weeks, but I can see myself still taking it to work for some time. It’s been great to keep up with the cricket as the SABC do not broadcast any radio commentary any more. If you have a job that that allows you to occasionally keep an eye on what happening(sport or news), then it’s fantastic. Otherwise where else would I use it? Perhaps if people did not have DSTV at home they would use it there, but I think not.

I will get it if it is bundled with my already expensive premium pack.

On the ads, it says that premium and compact subscribers get their subscriptions for free after the trial period

What Bighit said above.
Compact and Premium subscribers will not have to fork out anything extra besides the cost of the Drifta or a DVB-H enabled mobile phone. Even after the trial period.
But that offer is only available to current subscribers till the end of April. Fail to get your Drifta before then and you're going to fork out extra for the mobile TV every month.

The spectrum allocations in the article mentions e-tv and I'd honestly forgotten that they'd also launched their mobile offering, all be it with fewer channels.
But has no one dabbled with e-tv to date?

If the amount of media coverage and general hype is to be taken into consideration, e-tv are falling behind in this initiative.

It sounds really cool since I dont have DSTV. Especially supersport 1,2 and 3 for R36 a month doesnt seem that bad. I remeber reading the initial artical and there was a lot of speculation around the broadcast resolution does anyone know what the actual res is?

Then they will FAIL.

BTW the cricket commentary is back on Radio 2000 (I listened to the Durban game).

The channel line-up on the DStv Mobile bouquet will initially include a selection of SuperSport channels (1, 2, 3 and Blitz)

From 1 April 2011 the DStv Mobile bouquet will cost subscribers R36 per month.

Am I correct in reading that you can effectively get the DSTV Sport channels for R36 per month? I wonder how many people will can their premium subscriptions and just use this?

I just wish their coverage extended to my suburb. I could totally see myself using the iPad app while my kids dominate the tv.

Why not suggest to Multichoice that they install equipment on one of the several towers near you and then they will attract quite a few subscribers from the Wild Side - from the river mouth right down past you to the first resorts?

Premium and compact subscribers get their subscriptions for free until 31 March 2012. With the cost of the premium subscription I would hope this would continue. R529 (Subscription)+ R65(PVR functionality) + R36(DSTV mobile). WOW = R630. So lets hope they at least continue with free DSTV mobile if you already pay for the premium subscription.

Tried dvb-h when they ran their first trials a few years ago.

Main applications seemed to be sport, sport and sport - for those who for some reason have to be away from a big screen.

The issue with coverage was that if you moved out of good coverage, or even you stayed still and the signal drifted, your screen went dead in the middle of what you were watching, and sometimes took a while to recover.

Another problem I remember (may have improved) is the drain on the battery from watching anything more than a few minutes. I ended up watching some spectacular world cup soccer moments, but then being having my cellphone on low battery minutes later.

Due to the terrain around here one probably wouldn't be enough but I suppose it's worth a shot.

I'm also going to ask around and see if anyone I know has one - perhaps the map is just wrong.

The FAIL would be from the subscriber that never took advantage of the deal, as it's being heavily advertised and marketed.

Looks like I got the dates wrong in my earlier post, but Asterix_T has made mention of the proper dates.

The problem is that "away" games do not have commentry on any local radio station. Radio 2000 only provide commentary if its local games(Cricket and Rugby).

I emailed Multichoice and the resolution was something like 380x240 and you could stretch the window to 640x480 but no bigger. That would then not allow you to watch it via a TV out cable to your TV set. Is this still the case or have they changed their stance on this, or has someone hacked the software to enable fullscreen
