About canning the subscription, i think most people with premium subscriptions have HD TV and sport on non-HD TV is crap.
I LOVE watching my games on HD channels. And by the way F1 will be on HD next year. That alone... is enough reason to go premium.

However can someone give us a good review on picture and voice quality. Can you use it say in the car or it must always be stationary.
 
Well done, a much better technical article than the previous one. Just a few things though:

The whole 'multiple antennae not interfering with each other' is called beamforming.
The guard bands are there for synchronization and make sure no ISI happens since the standard uses OFDM, they're not exactly there just for the phased arrays.

Ok, I admit if you want HD then this is not what you are looking for.

But for someone that does not want to spend ~R600 per month just to watch the occasional rugby or cricket match, R36 per month seems like a fair deal :)

Why would that be of any concern?
You're either a subscriber that's going to buy the Drifta and never worry about costs again, or you're a non-subscriber that's going to buy the Drifta and be left with a R36 monthly charge from April 1, 2011.
There is no other cost associated with the product.
There are no data charges hidden, as the TV signal is sent to your Drifta and then transmit via Wifi to one of the devices that are currently supported.

You basically get one year for free if you have a DSTV subscribtion. From their website.

From 1 April 2011, existing DStv satellite Premium and Compact subscribers will be in for a treat as access to DStv Mobile will continue to be at no extra cost as subscription will be included in the cost of their satellite subscription. This special offer to Premium and Compact subscribers will be applicable until 1 April 2012.

I bought a second N96 to try exactly this on a LCD Screen kept in my car. Would be great to catch the sport live in your car sometimes.

However, as soon as you go to live tv and output to tv, an icon of a key slashed with a line over it appears. I googled this and it has to do with DRM. What I dont understand is why DSTV is doing this? Why would anyone pirate content that's this low resolution?

Really dissapointing!!!!
 
I was looking over on the DStv mobile forum ... lot of unhappy users there. Just sayin!

I just purchased the unit after reading about it on mybb, so far it seems great, but the biggest disappointment would be the channel line up.

I'm really not a big sports fan so four sports channels is a waste, only thing I bought it for was the e-news channel, it would be great if they added CNN or BBC as well as a mixed content channel that has movies/series , or just add mnet to it at a bit higher price :)

+1. Mnet would add nice value to the product. There are definitely too many sports channels OR not enough other content channels, whichever way you want to look at it.

More along the line where you are somewhere with no tv and no radio broadcast of the event...

I have a pc connected directly to my TV via Svideo. Would this apply in that scenario? As far as the PC is concerned its just a 2nd monitor... Also, can the viewing app be made fullscreen? right now i play AVI's in VLC and just drag it across to the TV screen and maximise - was wondering if one could do the same with this?

Check the picture quality before you buy

I saw a demo at watched incredible connection and the picture size and quality on a laptop is not good. Maybe on a cell phone iit will be ok but at R35 a month it sounds like old mnet channel production. If you buy it you will bang your head against a wall
 
is there some software that is needed to pick up the drifta signal on a laptop?
