PRINCETON, N.J., March 18 (UPI) -- A U.S. researcher found a powerful link between financial security concerns and satisfaction with one's life.

Talya Miron-Shatz, a postdoctoral research fellow in the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University, said that in a study involving women, those who concentrated much of their thinking on financial matters were much less likely to be happy with their lives.

Contrary to expectations, many of those with such worries had plenty of money by conventional standards, suggesting that there is more at play in obtaining peace of mind than simply having cash, Miron-Shatz said.

"Even if you are making a hundred grand a year, if you are constantly worried that you are going to get fired, that you are going to lose your health insurance or that you are simply not sure you are going to 'make it,' you are not going to be happy," Miron-Shatz said.

These concerns, affected a wide variety of women at all income levels, Miron-Shatz said.

Conversely, those who didn't fixate on finances like retirement savings, tuition for college or simply making ends meet, reported being the happiest of the group.

The study was published in the journal Judgment and Decision Making.

I don't make a huge amount but still I also worry about losing my job etc, etc ...

This means I'm the worst off. :(

Why aim small? I'm sure that you'd rather want enough money to Buy the house, instead of just qualifying for a loan. ;)

I'm realistic. You need at least R25000 per month to qualify for a small loan. A teacher will never get that, unless his/her spouse also earns a salary.

That's difficult for you, Picard. So can we presume that you rent at the moment? Does the DOE give rent assistance?

I've been rich and I’ve been poor -- and believe me, rich is better.

The school's governing body pays me. Computers skills classes isn't an official learning area in primary schools. Also I don't have a teaching qualification. Though I do have other, more, qualifications.

The DOE does give teachers a home subsidy of ... wait for it ... R300!

Money is more important to women than to men.

Nonsense. Money is much more important to men. We need it to buy houses, cars and jewelry to attract the best women. Traditionally women aren't (weren't) earners, they aspired to catch the biggest fish with the most $$. ;)

I've got a silver 1997 Toyota Corolla 160GLi with 175 000km on the clock. :(

Picard, luckily the mileage on your odo means as much to a woman as the latest celebrity gossip does to you, so you're set there. Just make sure it looks presentable. I had a Toyota corolla once, an RSI. Was a good car! :)

I know it's shocking! I started out in teaching and I won't go back. It's not just the salary though, teaching has become a really tough job especially now that the kids think they pay your salary ... little squirts :D.
