Monthly Electricity Consumption

Ummm...reading this thread makes me think our elec usage is way too high. We average about 40kwh per day. 3 adults.

Any electricity saving tips? We will go back to solar with the one geyser.

Geyser and pool pump. Boiling the kettle 10 times a day is maybe 1 kWh. (Might actually be cheaper than using a geyser...)

4 kw geyser per day is about 20 degrees C in heating. In winter, temperature at 20 C. You have having a cold shower.

For a 20 degC rise we'd need to use about 170 litres. But we probably use about half that, so get double the heat. 80 litres, 15->60 degC, in the ballpark for a couple of post-day-zero showers. Not counting standing loss...

You're averaging like 200kWh pp, that's not bad.

The have the following:
- 2 geysers (one is solar but the elec part of the geyser has been on for a bit because it was cloudy and cold, and prior to that, the solar panels needed to be replaced which has been done)
- gas stove
- elec oven (used maybe once a week, if that)
- pool pump
- electronics (2 PC's, TV, Nas, Nuc etc)
- elec fencing
- the usual household stuff - fridge, microwave etc.

Our domestic worker seems to boil the kettle like 10 times a day :/. Not sure how much difference that would make though.

Any electricity saving tips? We will go back to solar with the one geyser.
Look at thermal blanket if old geyser, check that your lights are LED.
If the fridge/dishwasher is 90's, consider upgrading cost vs maintenance, that old stuff runs forever if Eskom didn't pull its nonsense.

Electric fencing doesn't use much power, stays in the system, pool pump can use a heck of a lot of power so check if it's properly installed and good rating.

Our 5 man household's main power consumption was downlight halogens, we had 40 of them at 50W, so 2kWh for ~6-8 hours burning a day, swapped those all with 3W ones so 120Wh instead, that adds up pretty quick as highest bracket while the light for LED is a lot better in terms of even lighting, so we ended up dimming more instead of full brightness like we used to.

I know a friend bought an old house recently, lady had some 1000-1500W R7S bulbs that he immediately swapped once he realized.

pool pump for pool,
pool pump on float switch to filter wellpoint water, another pump with pressure switch supplying the filtered water to 2 toploaders for now, 12 and 14 kg,
1 big whirlpool tumble dryer,
Cooking is electric.
1 x defy dishwasher
3 bedroom and 2 bathrooms.
Normal kwikwot geyser.

Smaller
Alarm
PC and laptops
Various printers

Still only get to about to 600kw.

But I am selective over which appliances I buy, even lights etc.

Just to add, I dont switch the geyser off.

Ok, so you have a smaller geyser. Never thought about that.
 
Technically I have 2 houses on the property which explains some of it...

Also a pool, and 2 freezers + 2 fridges + 2 dishwashers + + ... the joys of a large property and 2 houses.
The pool is probably a big consumer.
I have 2 people living in my house, with 2 deep freezers, 3 fridges and the rest of the usual things.
2 PC's run 24 hours a day etc.
Our usage is around 10kw/day. We do have a solar geyser, LED lights everywhere and a gas stove.
 
600 units for 2 adults and a child. Must be oil heaters I think. I don't know how some of you have less than 300 units per month. Well done to whatever you are doing.

Thinking about it a bit more, turns out I'm actually mostly counting standing loss, seeing as geyser is not on a timer...

Standing loss for 150 litres is probably 2.5 kWh or so per day (2.59 maximum per SANS).

So if it's 4 kWh total there's only 1.5 kWh of useful heating => 30 litres raised 15->60 degC.

Around 1500 units per month.

Large house, 3 geysers, 3 fridges and two central aircon systems that can each use around 7kw per hour
 
We used to live in a flat and thought our usage would go up when we moved into a house, but it's pretty much stayed the same.

Summer - 280 units
Winter - 420 to 560 units

Smart automation nearly everywhere to constrain usage .eg pool pump runs 6 hours in summer but 2 hours in winter months , etc , kitchen geyser on days when domestic is there or weekends, heat pump only comes during middle of day, but it's been acting up so had to turn on element.

All geysers automatically turn off after 3 hours by the HA system, if on timer of if someone turns it on manually (Alexa turn on bathroom geyser :))

Aircons and heaters, electric blankets used in Autumn winter for the SO and little Luddites.

If house is unoccupied:-
Daytime load is about 475w
Night load is 650w (outside lights)

It's expensive by others standards here but considering the size and load being managed , I think pretty good thanks to smart management

The devices that are being power monitored
2 x fridges use about 2kw a day
Pool pump uses 1.1 kW per hour of runtime
Heat pump uses 3-7kw. Bathroom element uses that in 2 hours!
All networking and home computers,.etc using 1.8kwh a day. Need to connect my alarm and stuff to see how much they use
Kitchen geyer uses about 2.5kw on the days it runs.

All the outside lights are also on smart switches using GPS to work out sunrise/sunset and they configured to turn on 15 mins / before after daily. Nice control, was automation built in from the beginning or did you add it and do it on your own?
 
Yesterday was a record at our place - 25.5 kWh. Cold day.
