I do agree 165 isn’t a massive number but at the same time these are verified purchasers of the device and not just random people asked their opinion with no vested interest.

That carries a much deeper value.

As these things go probably a 1000 or more people got the survey and maybe 500 started doing it and got distracted with only 165 actually finishing it with useful data.
 
I have no issue with the phone itself - it's really just how this 'survey' was conducted. They should have held back on releasing the figures until they had a proper sample size. If they're manipulating these results to suit them, what else are they manipulating? Selecting the 60% of Apple stores in New York only in order to get the results?

Granted - I know this was for a reason and they're trying to fake huge success with the XR amidst the 'panic' that is going on.

I'm not so sure that money comes into the equation anymore of Android or iPhone anymore.

I know the perception is generally Android = poor and iPhone = rich, but nowadays with contracts there's what there's very little in it over a 24 month period. And I think the guys that buy an Android flagship, have no issue with spending another R60.00pm to get the iPhone if they wanted.

I know it didn't come from Apple - so CIRP or whoever did the survey, did it incorrectly (or far too limited)
Maybe they should just call the test invalid and do it again ?

My take? I think Apple need some positive news right now. So if 26 people in the US changed, that's good enough.
 
I think everyone in the smartphone space needs some good news. Aren't sales, generally, down across the board year on year? Or, if not, growth is negligible?

Think the big winners in 2018 have been Huawei and Oneplus. Would have been interesting to see a similar survey conducted at the Oneplus pop up event in NY recently...

I suspect these things are ongoing and the numbers flow in perpetually.

If someone runs with the data to early to suit their narrative you blame the people collecting the data.

Personally don’t think Apple needs anything. They are hardly down and out like the media would have one believe.

Not down and out - for sure they have massive cash reserves, but there are a few points that must have opened some eyes :

A share price dropping so low, in such a short time isn't great. I think Warren Buffet has lost $20 billion in the last few months!
Then there are the sales warnings from every supplier and analysts
And then Apple deciding not to release any more figures because of the above.
 
There was actually another article recently I read by Forbes - where they wanted to compare the XR Facial Recognition system against the Androids. The title was something like 'iPhone XR wipes the floor with Android again' or something to that effect. The Apple sites went crazy and patted each other on the back again. So they took 2D facial recognition Androids and ran it against the 3D facial recognition system of the iPhone XR, smartly avoiding the 3D systems.

They then printed a 3D head and opened each Android - but not the iPhone obviously ...

So, aside from avoiding the actual competition - they surely must have switched off the Android security features?
I've had those 2D systems for a while too, and they need (a setting) a blink or something, purposely so a photo cannot be used.

I just it coincidental that in 2 months, with everything going on at Apple, they have these two articles on the XR and how fantastic it is. But when you look closer, the tests aren't really fair / relevant at all and makes you wonder how much other reporting (even by other companies) is really accurate ?

Ja look share price wise anyone speculating will get hurt.

But share price is also independent of profits being made and not a direct gauge of how well a company is going.

A 5% drop in profits from 40% is hardly suffering etc.

Come on dude, Apple's face unlock/facial recognition software/hardware is streets ahead of the competition! Has been since day one! Sure, competitors iteration has been progressively refined but they been playing catchup for the most part...

I'm happy to agree - But how is it better ?

Everyone seems to say 'it's much better' but can't actually quantify why. It 'just is' ...

The M20P is also 3D ... also IR ... also 30,000 dots ... also lightning fast ... but what makes one better than the other? Genuine question
And regarding my post, why leave out anything that even compete?
And why deactivate the security settings?

When you look at everything, it seems a weird test (same as 26 users in the US leave Apple)

Will have to wait for the comparison videos to launch pitting the M20P vs iPhone but compared to say the Note 9 the differences are significant, on just about every metric. Unlock angles, low light test, full darkness test, sunglasses test, disguise test etc etc etc Is Samsung using face recognition for online payments? I don't think so, iris scanner exclusively where Apple's facial recognition is considered safe enough for payments. So to an extent, Samsung doesn't consider their own face recognition system secure enough.

Does it have Retina/Eyeball tracking? I know the iPhone doesn't unlock if you hold the phone in front of your face and not look at it...

It's actually the M20P I'm keen on seeing, because they use the same system. In most reviews when they chat about the top phones of 2018, the M20P is up there and actually seems to be the logical comparison - but the majority of reviews focus on these Samsungs or as in the case of the Forbes test, some LG at half the price.
 
Don't blame them. With Android about to remove a ton of features such as call recording, certain locations apps and many more, the OS is about to go the route of many of Google's other services. I just recently bought 2 Note 9 phones. Will not update them to any new OS nor will I update any security patches. When my contract comes to an end I will be running to iOS as fast as I can.
 
It's just really interesting timing when the iPhone XR (if reports are to be believed) is not selling well at all.

And then twice in a single month, we get two not-so-great tests on how fantastic the XR actually is and it beats everything in it's path ; people are flocking away from the competition and lining up to grab one. It's just really inaccurate - that's all. It's not a bad device, but at least maybe report on something fair. Maybe when 50 users change from Android <> iOS, then launch some global to say how marvelous it is.

Or when phones that compete head on with a feature are out there, maybe use it to compare ... rather than cheap / previous generations. I don't my Samsung - but isn't the S9 the only fair one there?
LG is half the price?
Note 8 is old?

EDIT : And they must have turned OFF the security setting that detects a blink.

There is a setting for that on the iPhone.

Face ID also has an accessibility feature to support individuals who are blind or have low vision. If you don't want Face ID to require that you look at your device with your eyes open, you can open Settings > General > Accessibility, and disable Require Attention for Face ID. This is automatically disabled if you enable VoiceOver during initial set up.
