More on SA cell towers

A look inside a Telkom LTE base-station

A few days ago, I stumbled across some Telkom guys busy doing what they said was a complete LTE re-fit at one of the multi-operator ATC base-stations in my area. It's the same station as appeared in this post.

I was interested in this station because it was one of those recently identified as being involved in Telkom's "Uncapped LTE" promotion. Previously ATC had told me Telkom wasn't on this station, so I went there to see what had changed.

This particular station is also interesting in that I'm 99.9% sure it has a backhaul data connection into a node of a DFA (Dark Fibre Africa) fibre-optic cable that goes right past - see this post.

Anyway, unlike before where I couldn't see into the station, this time I could actually get access so I took the opportunity to chat with the guys and take some pics.

With the gate open, all is revealed:

There are four operators using this ATC highsite, each with their own equipment cabinet :

Telkom Mobile is front right, with CellC behind it. Front left is MTN, back left is Vodacom.
Look at the size of some of those coaxial feeder cables lying coiled on the ground in front!

On the left side, top to bottom, is some Cat6 network distribution equipment, fibre transceivers, DC power distribution and cabinet air-conditioning equipment. The three devices standing loose on the shelf on the right side are Huawei RRUs (Remote Radio Units), waiting to be fitted behind the antennas up on the mast. The red standby batteries are down below, two banks of 4x12V/190Ah batteries each to give the standard 48VDC supply used around telecoms equipment.

Each one is rated to consume a maximum of 16A @ 48VDC, a substantial 770W.

Here you can see some of the RRUs already fitted behind the sector antennas.
I guess Telkom got the worst (lowest!) position on this tower by virtue of being late to the cellular party in SA.

This one seems to have three distinct sets of orthogonally-polarised antenna elements (designated Y1, Y2 and Y3). There is also a Remote Electrical Tilt Unit (previously discussed here) plugged into the leftmost 'Tilt' port.

Can someone please identify the different technologies, LTE, 3g etc. that each one of the antenna (labeled) in image are used for. It is a Telkom tower sitting over the town exchange.telkom tower.jpg

Those are all sector antennae, each row probably has three 120° sectors. I don't think you can determine the different technologies based on the antenna, but I think the longer ones (e.g. row 3) are for lower frequencies and the shorter ones (e.g. row 4) are for higher frequencies.
Did you see there is a sixth row near the bottom in the red section?
Because there are so many rows of antennae, I think some might belong to other network operators sharing the tower with Telkom.
 
Using historical Google street view if you look at the tower before the launch of telkom mobile the antenna labeled 1 is not there yet. As this is an LTE enabled tower antenna one must be pumping out both hsdpa and LTE. Quote from 8ta website "The Radio Access Network supports HSPA, is configured for downlink speeds up to 7.2Mbps, and can be provisioned to support download speeds of up to 21Mbps. In addition the network hardware allows for a seamless migration to LTE (4G). "

Is that a (recent) photo you took, or is it part of an image pulled off Google Earth / Maps ?
Reason I ask is that the StreetView imagery is often quite old and a lot of the Telkom stations have undergone significant re-fits in the last year or so, partly due to the rollout of LTE and the current uncapped LTE promotion. A lot of the stations now have newer-type antennas which are quite recognisable.

I don't know whether Telkom's installation practises are the same around KZN (I'd presume so), but up Jhb/Pta way the current style seems to be to use one set of sector antennas to handle all of the higher-frequency signals (roughly speaking, 1700 - 2300MHz, covering all current Telkom 3G and 4G bands). These "multi-band" antennas contain one or more sets of orthogonally-polarised elements and are usually recognisable as being fairly "short" (vertically) and "fat" (horizontally) compared to the older single-purpose (eg GSM900) antennas. In my experience so far, they serve as a pretty good indicator of the presence of Telkom LTE on a station.

Yes it was a few days ago - but tower has not changed config since the launch of 8ta. Those antenna (number 1) are the original ones that handle HSDPA and now LTE. I have another tower LOS that has those more recent flat ones but it is not sitting directly over the telephone exchange so i reckon I am connected to the best one in the area.

Yeah, it's hard to be sure, but those specific antennas (set #1) on the tower you show (tallish, with curved front) look like some of the older Powerwave multi-band antennas that have been mentioned on this thread before, like this one :

If you look carefully, you can just make out the labels for 960MHz (GSM) and 1710-2170 (3G) feeds on this one.

Other makes and types (like the short, fat, flat panels) seemed to become more common, starting (I guess) when Powerwave went under early in 2013.

Why would you assume that ? Test is best! :D
Some of the hottest stations up this area are miles from the nearest exchange, but with good fibre feeds :p

Buuuuut then again ... there aint much wrong with the last few results you've posted!

My S4 android does not show cell tower info.

I wonder if it even works on the older phones. I remember Vodacom used to show the name of the tower and the sector. MTN seemed to have a different name for each of the three sectors, not the location of the tower but rather the area served by that sector.

In Victoria West where I went to school, every year when it was the "Wildsfees" Vodacom would change the tower to show "Wildsfees" on anyone's phone that was living there or driving through the town.
