How To Make An American Quilt 6.6/10

Heart warming story of different generations of women bonding while regaling stories of their youth.

Kingsman: 5/10. Some bright parts but mostly just dreary, badly written nonsense. Sequences that just sort of happen without any context, a barrel-scraping performance by Samuel L Jackson, a My Fair Lady spy concept that never actually happens.. I wanted it to end much sooner than it ended.

As Above So Below

Found footage based horror steered me away but eventually after watching it I actually like this one.

8/10

Pros

Good acting.
The setting is a great place for a horror.
Builds tension and doesn't just cause stupid anticipation with nothing, it actually has jumpy moments.
The strangeness of the occult theme actually resolves in a plot.
Some interesting stuff about the Paris underground.

Cons

Obvious expendable characters.
Still that "Ooh a dead person just showed up, lets follow him into that creepy place." unintelligible decisions...
last 20 minutes of the film did not suite the buildup properly.
The camera work is really crazy and causes motion sickness, I know it's meant to be this way but it was a tad .
In horror I prefer obscuring some CG more to blend it in better. Some visuals were way to vivid and detailed and spoiled the eeriness.

It is the only found footage film I'd recommend people watching.

Mmmm, terrible directing from what had such potential.

Never seen Afflicted or Chronicle but Cloverfield... nah. The premis for it has no originality in it apart from being a found footage version of a godzilla like monster. 5/10

Poltergeist (2015) 6.5/10

I watched the 1982 original many yrs ago when I was a kid & can't recall much but I rather enjoyed this 2015 remake. It's still rather creepy & even though it's very much modernized it still has many of the original movie elements. Sam Rockwell has the habit of making light moments even in a horror.

Tale of Tales (2015) - 6/10

Not too sure what to make of this movie. A weird fantasy movie, with weird characters.
Yet, it kept me interested until the end, just to find out how it ends.

It Follows (Some spoilers)

Indie horror film with a really simple yet unexpectedly creepy concept.

The story is about a sexually transmitted demon that follows and kills the last person who obtained it. Yes that is right, a sexually transmitted demon lol. The reason for its creepiness is mostly the slow pace which it just walks but never stops. It takes on the form of anybody and once it kills it reverts back to the last person still making it a you're screwed forever situation.

7.5/10

Pros

OK Acting for a indie horror.
The characters aren't stupid which is a new one for a horror film dealing with high school kids.
Artistic scenes and shoot styles including a number of 360 shots putting emphasis on how the infected needs to look around constantly to avoid the thing coming to close.
Keeps you watching to see if you can spot the demon in the background.

Cons
Another teenager horror with an over dramatic problem about sex.
There are completely useless scenes in the film that has absolutely nothing to them.
Scooby doo based plan the kids attempt to kill it (Maybe this should be a pro cause it might just be the kind of dumb thing they would try but I found it a tad inconsistent with the film.)

I'd also recommend this one. If a Indie group can turn something this basic into a movie I enjoyed they might just be the next Stanley Kubrick.

Southpaw (2015) - 6/10

Basically a different version of Rocky.

Pros

Scene on the beach done very well and then there's the other beach scene. Why did she swim out to those blokes on the boat?
