Moving from Mweb to Crystal Web

I got adsl recently
I tried out 3 different ISP accounts before settling on vox.
However, I would have considered crystal web if I get an understanding of the news server and what benefit it gives.

A news server offers you the ability to download various types of content and use things like SABNZBD and Sonarr, however these are configs you'll need to follow guides for as we don't personally advise on these at all. We provide you with access to news server download resources and you choose what you want to download from it. There are some very helpful guides on things like SABNZBD configs on MyBroadband and a few for Sonarr as well.

Best ask the community for advice as to what they are currently doing with their news server setups and what it's used for by them, as each person may differ...

Thank you Sir :). What attracted me to CW was

- the great reviews
- the fairness factor in Crystal Web's approach
- your walk and talk sounds different, making me feel like I'm not a number
- you're more accessible

Very comfortable with my choice

EDIT: I see you are being convinced by people that leaving your line with Telkom ISP is best. Well, all ISPs now operate on a level playing field. No ISP (including Telkom) gets any favour when it comes to that management. That is because Openserve now manage all lines on wholesale...

DJ quick question. If Telkom is now a regular isp, and you are on Telkom, who gets sent out if there are issues? Do Openserve send out technicians to resolve?

I've been with many ISPs. None work nearly as well as Crystal Web. DJ is probably up to some voodoo s**t.

Almost feel bad for CW - they spend so much effort creating a great customer support experience but then hardly any customers need to use it.

But on the odd occasion you do end up having to use the support you are very grateful that he puts so much effort into it.
 
My only complaints so far are that other Twitch streamers don't have good setups and I can't always maximise my Youtube throughput because the local CDN is up to **** most of the time.

Otherwise, I see full speed from most protocols just about every day.

Technically, yes, even though they wear Telkom jackets and drive Telkom vans. The chain is now ISP > Telkom > Openserve > Technician. A bit odd in the interim, but soon it'll be ISP > Openserve > Technician, as Telkom is shifting the way they manage and apply voice line services.

Here's where I'm at now

  1. Completed CW subscription
  2. Subcribtion will be activated on the 1 August
  3. MWEBHelp aranged for Mweb cancellation dept. to contact me
  4. Within 1 hour they did and said I'll receive an sms to confirm cancellation (no forms were filled in and I didn't send any emails)
  5. Contacted Telkom to move DSL to Telkom holding pool for migration (CW to take over management)
  6. Telkom said it'll take 14 - 30 days

How does this work?

Do you buy an LTE modem and Simcard from Telkom, pay for "ADSL" rental and then continue using whichever ISP you want?

So in this picture:

ADSL Line ---> Modem ---> Router ---> ISP Login via PPoE ---> home network

becomes

[-]ADSL Line[/-] ---> [-]Modem[/-] LTE Modem ---> Router ---> ISP Login via PPoE ---> home network

or am I confused.

How much do you pay Telkom per month for the LTE connection?

You have to have a data bundle with telkom. So voice- Line - data and Integrated Telkom sim. However, if they are managing your line, then you can still use another isp for data. The data though will only work if you have a data package with Telkom.

Great to have you with us. Let us know as soon as Telkom confirm the line is in the holding pool - you don't need to wait for the data subscription to begin before migrating the line over to us...;)

Telkom is managing my line.

So, if I took a deal like this [SmartBroadband Wireless 5 GB with Huawei B315 LTE Router R199.00 PM x 24] https://secure.telkom.co.za/today/shop/home/plan/smartbroadband-wireless-variation/ would I be able to 'simply' swap my existing router as per the picture below?

ADSL Line ---> Modem ---> Router ---> ISP Login via PPoE ---> home network

becomes

ADSL Line ---> Modem LTE Modem ---> Router ---> ISP Login via PPoE ---> home network

@DJ..., Is there anything special I would have to arrange with Crystal Web?


Edit: As an aside, I'm none too trusting of the reliability of LTE though...

Is your line still active in the mean time? I'd love to find out how much downtime you experience.

Yes it's still active. I'm still with Mweb
There will be no downtime because the DSL is still Telkom's infrastructure. Only the management thereof will be taken over by CW (and you pay CW for the rental - I'm sure they have made their own deal with Telkom)

The switch over will be on the data supply side within 1 day from Mweb to CW - 31st July Mweb's last day, 1st Aug CW's first day.

All of this time the DSL will still be active. There will never be a time when I'll have data but no connection during the transition.

DJ (CEO CW) should be able to confirm this. For quicker response though, try their online live chat. Those guys are pretty awesome in answering all these questions
 
I went from Mweb to Crystal Web and have never looked back the difference is like chalk and cheese :D Thank you CW for being the best ISP in South Africa :D
