Hi Guys PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!

I'm new to MS Server 2008 ... so i need all the help i can get ... basically a quick break down of the network and the problem is:

ADSL Router Connecting to a switch
MS Server 2008 Connecting to the switch

Server is configured as DC and has AD running with DNS Server and DHCP
DHCP Server is ....0.1
ADSL Router is .....0.250

For some reason the server cannot access the internet. But when i connect my laptop to the switch it works fine.

Server IP is static and adsl router IP is static...

its a DNS problem i'm guessing... I didn't setup the server so I'm not sure what has been added or removed etc..

I dunno where i am going wrong here!

Help is appreciated thanks ya'll...:o

On Server, in CMD box, run ipconfig /all
Check that the gateway is set on Server network card - often the gateway is left blank
Check that ADSL Router is 250 as often ADSL is set as 254

thats is all correct! i should know how to sort this out but cannot find the means lol im stuck

as i said anynotebook that i connect to the switch works fine ... ip address: 192.168.0.x gateway 0.250 and dns 0.250 and i can browse.

but the above mentioned config does not want to work on the server machine... *confused* and thus non of the pc's on the network have access to the internet either ...

you'll need to set routing and remote access rules up with the RRAS wizard should you want other PC's to access the Internet via this server.

or, alternatively, use a dedicated firewall such as smoothwall to protect your network. Then you don't have the headaches and extra administration on your Windows server to share the internet between the other PC's.

A quick and dirty way would be to use the Internet Connection Sharing wizard...

okay but then should the internet not work on the server first? cos i have no internet connection on the server... i want to use a proxy but the boss man is not very keen so basically i have to make do with what we have right now which sucks ... i might add a virtual machine with linux on it for the proxy ... but til then i need to get the net at least up and running you see ...

so you say ICS WIzard okay will try all that thanks... anything else will be appreciated :)

Seems like a DNS problem. You say the server has DNS installed as well. What is the forwarder ip in DNS on the server? ?And what DNS IP is the server set to use?

What options are in DHCP? What settings are the cliens getting?
Does your laptop work when you assign static IP or does it work with the DHCP assigned IP settings?

NEVER use ICS on a domain controller.... don't even go that route

and do a traceroute from the server, first to a dns name, ie google.co.za and then to a IP on the internet. You will then see if it's a dns problem or not... if the server cannot resolve the IP of google.co.za it will not do the traceroute

Instead of doing a traceroute, use nslookup to see if the PC's DNS is working or not.
