1) Yes you can just use current Firmware.
Vodacom have the new firmware download on there site. It is for Vista support. I did the firmware update & had no problems.

2) If you run the E220 Huawei download it wipes the E220 VMC-lite software anyway. It wont break dont worry. Have done it several times.
:):)

I unistalled the VMC and VMC lite manually already. It was doing anything for me. Wouldn't even create a connection.

Thanks Charles I'll install Huawei dashboard tonight :) Would like to see my signal strength and data usage.

Cant wait for 1st June! Voda are upgrading there speeds for HSDPA to 3.6 or 7.2 i think it was. Hopefully its all still on track :)

Hi Andre1 ,

Please could you tell me which version of the Huawei Dashboard you using with you Vodafone E220? I tried VMC-Lite and its rubbish and so is the standerd firmware that came with the E220. It takes forever to connect and stuff and at the moment im just using the standerd windows dialup connection...I dont wanna flash my device I just wanna use the hauwei dock...

Did you download yours from here?
http://www.huawei.com/mobileweb/en/doc/list.do?type=-1&id=736

And which version are you using and do you need to flash ur modem with any of the following:
E220-HOSTB106D04SP00C03 (Normal)
E220 HOSTB106D02SP00C03 (Normal)
E220 HOSTB105D01SP01C03 (Normal)

Thanks for the help :)

Hi Mike.

I've just jumped into the deep end and I have un-install all my old sofotware. I've thought, either make it or break it. After the removal of the old software, I have run Ccleaner to make sure that nothing of the old software is left on my PC or register, re-boot and installed E220-HOSTB106D04SP00C03 (Normal the 29 May 2007 version. It installed without any problems onto my E220 modem. Just remember under the Choose network connection, select 3G Only and not 3G preferred. Make sure you select Choose network, manual. I had a problem with the Auto selection that the signal does not stay stable, it come and go all the time. On Manual setting the signal indicate UMTS with 4 bars constant.

Once installed make sure that you enter the string command under;
Control Panel/Printer and other hardware/Phone and Modem options/Modem/Properties/Advanced.
After setting it up re-boot.

Hope it will help.

Ok well I've had enough of both the Huawei and Vodafone software and dashboards! I kept having conflits, PC took long to find the device and the **** took toooooooo long to connect:

My solution:
1> Copied the folder called DRIVERS in "c:\program files\Huawei"
2> Formatted and re-installed XP Sp2.
3> Connected the device, unistall "USB Storage Device" from Device Manager.
4> Unplug and replug device and then driver wizzard comes up.
5> Point to the DRIVERS folder you backed up. Poiint to the folder both times the wizzard appears.
7> Set the APN in advanced properties of modem.
6> Create a normal windows dialup connection and you sorted!

No more rubbish auto running software. Device is picked up within 10 seconds. Connects within 5 seconds. Its running beautifully!

If you wish to monitor signal strength etc...you can use the app by ginggs:

Download:

I use the app now and then and works great with above method ;)

Hope it helps someone having trouble with the **** dashboards!

Ag no man it really is very easy and simple. There must have been something wrong with your original Windows XP installation. I sound like had a problem with your usb port drivers. If these are ok and it does not auto install go to the folders on usb memory and setup and Bingo there you go. You have now obviously done this with folders you copied. But really it is very simple. I have done it several times. You dont have to create dialers or do any tricks, it realy does work easy. But version 9.1 was not a happy experience for me(Slooooooow etc. I am using Huawei dash. Well good luck any way. "Lekker speel." Just be carefull that you speel to much and go out of bundle. Want dit is die wet van Transvaal.:D

3g Usb Modem Installation Problem

Hi,

I've installed Dasboard V9 that came with the USB modem, without obviously reading the manual :(

V9 is for Vista, but I have WinXP SP2. After un-installing V9 which didn't work (obviously), I just plugged in the USB Huawei modem into the PC, waiting for it to do its thing (installing the drivers and software). It pick it up as Mass Storage device and then just show an excalamation mark next to it in the Device Manager after a minute or two.

Sometimes I get as far as picking it up as a CD-Rom, (apparantly it shows as a CD-Rom according to Vodacom), when first installed, but just hangs there.

If anybody can please help!!!

It works on pc's that didn't had V9 installed prior installed, but what must I do if V9 was installed prior, without re-installing Windows?

Greatly appreciated!!!

V9 works on XP, all versions are backwards compatible. Why do you think it did not work on your XP system?

It doesn't pick up the modem...., it scans till it ask whether is should stop or not......

In the device manager, it picks it up as a Mass storage device and after a while gets an excalamtion mark next to it. (Device cannot start, if think the code is '0')?

Sounds like your PC is not picking up the USB device. Common causes include:

- Outdated BIOS on the PC
- USB patches / updates for your motherboard

- Something else interfering with the plug and play detection. Often this can be a program like a virus scanner or you have drive numbers mapped where the modem tries to install. If you search through the forum, there are a number of causes such as this with potential fixes.

Thanks, makes sense. I'll try all of them and post an update.

I tried this however on two different PC's with the same symptoms (a P4 and AMD Athlon), obviously possible for both of them to have the same causes.

I upgraded the VMC to V2.xx when I was struggling with the installation, that shouldn't make a difference, does it?

Also, I can use the long or short cable? Thanks

We had a similar case here on the forum, where one forumite could not get his E220 working on 3 different PC's. Turns out he used the same virus software (if I recall correctly) on all three.....

Cable length won't affect functionality, possibly signal level.

Thanks 3G, sorted at last.

It was software that was on all the computers that either conflicted or blocked the USB modem.

Works like a charm now, and fast......connects @ 3.6mbps :)

VMC9 and XP... Not a good idea!

Hi All

I've found that VMC9 crashes XP completely. The Blue Screen of Death says it all. As soon as you try to open the App, it gives the screen, and reboots everytime.

I advise my Customers to not use it on XP!

We must have thousands of users by now using V9 on XP. The vast majority of users will be on XP. Say ~120K to be safe. If ~12% have upgraded to V9, it means we have between 10 and 20 thousand users on this combo.

I've not heard general complaints on V9/XP. Will check with the product manager, but if such a generic problem exists, the forum normally lights up like a Xmas tree.

Ja, maybe its just certain PC configurations that causes it to crash, because i do get alot of complaints regarding VMC9 and XP.

Maybe those people are just... Unlucky?

Can you name the software that was causing the Conflicts so that we are all aware of the pitfalls.

Remember to always uninstall all other version of the software.

Are you now using VMC 9.x

v3g I have had the same problems with V9.x. Slow takes a long time to detect hardware & sometimes just not very stable.

What is the the Big thing around V9.x That is one of the reasons I am using the 27 May 2007 Huawei dash. I have posted about this quite a while ago.
