[MS Windows] Huawei E220 USB HSDPA modem: software installation & other issues

New member, new problem, right forum??

Hi all, sorry if I'm in the wrong place, I'm new to this, so forgive me if I'm posting this in the wrong place.

I have read through the thread with interest, hoping to find an answer to my problem.

I have an E220 USB modem, that causes my laptop to act very strangely. The mouse pointer will suddenly go out of control, moving all over the screen, clicking and right clicking at will. I found (by chance) that removing the modem made it stop. I don't have any other devices connected to the USB ports. My first thought was virus, so I ran a virus scan and the malicious software removal tools, but no luck. Thought maybe the modem was infected (it is a mass storage device after all....?) but also seems ok. The problem is intermittent, went away for about 3 weeks, but today, it is back.

Any thoughts - BTW, it's at home, so don't have the version numbers of the dashboard, etc. I'm running VMC Lite, and it's a Vodaphone branded modem if that helps....

Thanks

Goracergo

Most likely RF interference causing this, due to inadequate screening on the laptop.

Try a much longer (5m) USB cable and move the E220 as far away from the laptop as possible.

Thanks for the quick response

Thanks for that speedy response guys, I'm going with the first thought, i.e. RF interference, as it does it even if there is no active connection, just needs the modem to be plugged in. Will read through the rootkits thread though, always willing to learn... Will let you know the outcome!

No mouse, using the built in pointing device on my Flybook V33i. Also has a touch screen, therefore the thought about RF Interference is probably accurate. Wooden work surface.

WRT the Flybook, it has an internal modem (think it's Siemans), but only supports GPRS/Edge, so at best I get 236Kbps connection, it is however a lot more stable than the E220, so, stability vs speed, depends on my mood which I use.

Does any1 know of 3rd party software that could be used instead of mobile partner/mobile connect, that could possibly give more control of the connection (ie tcp setting, other network related settings).

1. I has updating installer. Read at my previous post about Huawei E220 installer. This version 2 includes updates to huawei E220 usb modem and also extra package.

2. Extra package: wvstreams-4.4.1, wvdial-1.60, kppp-1.6.25, ndiswrapper-1.51-i486-2.6.23.12, ppp-2.4.4-i486-50.1 and nozomi. Try this if you still cannot dial huawei. This is extra package, this is not my installer. I'm just helping you to configure your wvstreams, wvdial and kppp. Extract a tar.gz and tar.bz file and follow instruction on readme.

3. To install extra package, Extract a tar.gz and tar.bz file, cd to folder. It must start with wvstreams first.

4. Get it free at:
http://www.savefile.com/files/1337714

5. Read at my blog for a date of version 2 is launched at:

I think you should be posting in the Mac and Linux thread, Here.

Disable your Firewall in your Anti-Virus Application and see what happens.

i don't use the mobile connect/partner to dial because of ipv6. well, i created a standard dial-up connection, whereabout the phone number is *99#. in device manager, by advanced settings of "Huawei Mobile connect - 3G Modem" must to set the following extra initial command (on advanced tab):
AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","APN"
implicitly, instead of APN use your ISP's APN name (you can check it in mobile connect/partner).
like this, you can control all settings of connection, e.g DNS servers/protocols etc.

Hi
I'm new to the Huawei modem world. I got a MTN E220 but want to know if it is possible to use this modem on both the local (MTN and Vodacom) networks. I have data bundles from MTN and my work is giving me Vodacom data bundles (this I used to use with my phone until it was borrowed from me on a permanent basis). What software must I use to be able to log onto the internet

Thanx

Thanx
The MTN connection works perfectly.
The Vodacom connection i have a bit of a problem with because the setup done for this previously was not done for the e220 but for a samsung F700v and if i use this connection i always run into an error. Any advice
Thanx

Shameless plug ;)

Someone should give this man a prize for all his work.

Oh, wait......

What error do you get?

Set the APN in the dashboard to 'internet', it works on both networks. Make sure the number to dial in your dial-up networking connection is '*99#' and that your modem does not specify an APN in the initialization string.

OK this might seem strange (remember newcomer):

If you say dashboard what do you mean.

I see the abbreviation APN but how do you set this.

I am doing the following: I start your program Mobile Data Monitoring (MDM)
If it register the provider at the top part I select connect.
Then a dialog is shown asking which connection to use.
I select the same one as I would select when using the MTN sim.
Then a dialog is shown to ask the number and it is *99# and then i select dial. It then show some activity like authentication and then give me an error 619 A connection to the remote computer could not be established.

thanx for your lesson in setting up an internet connection:o:o

I fully echo the thoughts as I tried this software by Ginggs and it works. I thank you Ginggs.

I mean the software that displays the status of your 3G modem; Vodafone Mobile Connect (Lite or Obese), Huawei Mobile Partner, MTN F@stlink, MDMA, etc, etc.
I see the abbreviation APN but how do you set this.
While on MDMA, just type something into the edit field and hit the 'Set APN' button.

It's a pleasure. :)

Problems!!!

Hi-this is specifically aimed at v3g, who might be able to help me.

I have the E220 vodafone version.
It was originally working fine on my old laptop running XP sp3. However, it then started giving serious connection problems and this combined with other various problems on the computer led me to format the laptop and reinstall XP.

This I did. I reinstalled all the drivers after XP was installed, ran Windows update and got every last update available, and installed AVG free v9 as the antivirus. Also installed one other program-Adobe reader 9.

Then I tried plugging the E220 in. Got the usual 'Found new hardware...' messages for mass storage, E220 etc, then got the message for found new CD drive-directly after which I got the USB disconnect tone and it disappeared. Shortly after that I got the VMC lite start.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close...Send/Do not send report message.

Funny thing after that-got the USB connect tone again...one or two found new hardware messages...before the disconnect tone and the CD drive disappears from My computer (By the way, no VMC lite icon ever appears with this CD drive on My computer). And then it connects again, before disappearing again. I get the idea that this would go on indefinitely until I go mad!!!!

Please please help me! I've tried to make sense of most of this thread, but I'm not sure of terms such as "flash the modem" and so on.

I have plugged the E220 into my other laptop running XP SP3 (also with AVG) with no problems. Also into 2 laptops with windows7-no problems! So I'm really at a loss. I've tried uninstalling, installing from a cd, copying the files from the E220 onto this problem computers hardrive and installing from there, i even reinstalled XP and tried at various stages to plug the E220 in-all with the same result. I JUST CANNOT GET THIS MODEM TO INSTALL!!!

Outdated BIOS? USB drivers? Any drivers? I don't really know the best method to fix this thing.

Once again, please please help me and thank you in advance for any time you can spend on this issue...
