MTN Black Friday Discussions

Out of interest, does anybody here live in Vanderbyl Park? I'm busy conducting a trial and I need one more test subject. I'd have to narrow it down even further though, so you would need to PM me your address and I'll check if you meet the criteria, but hey, it's 200gb of free data used through a special 5G antenna/ router that I provide, this is til January 25 2025, possibly even longer, lemme know.

Sounds like a good system you have there:laugh:
Only 34gb though? You lightweight, I average about 2tb per month

Lol I did 2.5 odd in the last 2.6 years.....of activity but it is more like 4 years total. This is what happens when you are in a rural area and always the last to get new technologies..........

So you are always squeezing economy of data till the last drop. For the longest time I used firefox because you could disable image loading, 240p youtube and if I needed to download stuff would always do it after midnight.

With larger caps has made midnight data mostly obsolete.....I still only do 480p youtube and whatever I am streaming I always make sure to choose none HD.......mobile data is far too expensive once you run out of your cap.

But I will be pushing the limits on this new contract now on the last two days, as this data doesn't carry over like the previous ones.....so yeah lots of linux distros ........Lol

Nah I get you, I harken back to a time when I used to use my SE K700i to download things off Limewire - never mind the fact that my computer had to be replaced due to malware ( Thank don't mess with the Zohan movie...), but at the time I was using GPRS at 7kbps for music downloads, one album used to take 2 days to download - I am personally grateful to 2024 o_O
Before 3G network got FLOODED, 384kbps was incredibly fast! In 2009 I was looking after coverage in the MPM region, and 1mb/s was deemed acceptable lol, look, just LOOK, at how far we have come in such a short period..

I still had dial-up when GPRS came along. It was a "revolution" for me, because I could stay connected without having to pay for the time!

Lol reminds me of the telkom 7 rand internet plan....back in the day, at the start of 2007 I finally got ADSL and that same year I moved to rural freestate and was stuck on edge again, it was only around 2010 when we finally got 3g here and I think around 2016 we finally got 4g...... averaging 22ping, 40mbps/25mbps.

Actually got lucky the one year on 3G/HSDPA was using a much older 3G modem loaded a uncapped bundle and for 8 months had uncapped internet did over 1tb during that time.....lol I could switch off my computer for a couple of hours no issue and just continue where I left off.

I think there was an issue with the MTN system at the time I think if you didn't get the activation smses and the capped reached smses it would just continue indefinitely, had numerous times where the capped and speed reduction didn't kick in and got a dat or two extra.

But 8 months......Lol, I downloaded my entire steam library during that time.....

That said for some or other reason some international sites MTN speeds ain't great for the last couple of months....for some protocols as well really iffy.....

Getting back on topic :)

A retentions agent yesterday claimed that they're no longer allowed to add voice minute+data bundles to pad up smaller contracts, like they did in the past. That seemed strange to hear, since adding those bespoke bundles was often their main ammunition for retaining customers who knew what to ask for.

The agent said that they changed this rule in the past year.

Has anyone else run into a similar story?
Or on the flipside, has anyone had retentions add bespoke minute/data bundles recently to smaller contracts, to entice you to sign for another contract period? (Just so we'll then know to try harder to call this out as BS)

I received this SMS today.
Looks like they are terminating the sim only contract I've had for a few years now.
Not sure, I have emailed the MTN shop that I opened the account with.

Y'ello, stay connected and up-to-date with MTN Business this Black Friday. Our records show that your current contract for xxxxxxxxx which is on a Made For Business S will expire on 2024/12/08. For uninterrupted communication check out the Black Friday Super Sale, you can visit any MTN Store and speak to any of our agents for more information. MTN Business.

Where does one find the new sim only deals. I had a look on the app and website, and don't see any attractive deals under their BF section.

The contract I was on had about 600 mins to any network and 25GB - been paying about R 149 pm sim only.

Where do you see the retentions deals?

I also have a data only sim contract that I either need to maintain or get a new contract in place. Think it's 400/500GB - about R320pm

Seen anything similar?

I'm on the same Business package, expires next month.
Don't waste your time. I've tried every route to get a similar deal. They are not interested. I've sent in a cancelation letter.
Going prepaid for now, and will share data from my other data package.

Usually when contracts "terminate", the account reverts to month-to-month at non-promotional pricing. So assuming you're on a business contract, check with their business helpdesk what that monthly payment will become after your termination date, assuming you don't completely cancel or upgrade in the interim.

Unfortunately, the closest one I've heard of for business accounts is the "Made For Business LC" which is 500 minutes and 15GB @ R399.

Their non-business Retentions department is also offering the same bundled minutes/data to non-business users on their Black Friday special "Yellow Essential Plan" @ R209, so if you can get the account off the business profile into your own name, that's a cheaper option.

If you're looking for the other deals, scroll through the posts in this thread from the past 2 weeks. Or just call and ask them what they'll offer you. Would be the Business Helpdesk for business contracts, or Retentions department for personal contracts.

Is this doable? Has anyone got it done successfully?

I want this yellow essential plan. So do I just call 135 and then contract cancellations and ask for this to renew my contract. I assume this is the only way I get put through to retentions?

135 and then just ask to be put through to Retentions, then ask the Retentions agent for that deal.

Thanks @Dean .
Called 135, chose contract cancellation and was immediately in retentions.

Asked for the Yellows Essential Plan. She mentioned these are voice + data retention deals

They had some other retention deals. Sadly I didn't write down while she was talking so I may have got the mins wrong, but I am certain I got the data + cost right from my memory.

10GB + 75 minutes R129
20GB + 75 mins for R169
15GB + 525 mins for R209
50GB + 75 min for R269

On my side: Done - 24 month contract, 525 Mins + 15GB for 24 months

Was told:

125 minutes, 10GB data @ R119
75 minutes, 20GB data @ R139
525 minutes, 15GB data @ R209
and I think there was a bigger one too, but I didn't go further.

Asked a couple of times if each of the options has a different name, and was told no, they're all just called "Yellow Essential" Plans with differing bundle sizes, specially created for Retentions Black Friday only.

525 minutes, 15GB data @ R209

that would work for me... havent seen any such offer though.. oh i see you're supposed to dial 135.. an MTN shop / agent usually helps me.. but haven't been able to get through to them.. I check in with them every year around this time.

Is there a special without agreeing a 24 month contract?

From Retentions, the only 12 month options I was told were:

Sky Bronze - 1600 minutes, 30GB @ R699
Yellow Plan Deluxe - 500 minutes, 15GB @ R499

There may have been smaller Yellow Plan options too, but wasn't interested so not sure.

How old does your existing contract need to be in order to be eligible?

Depends on the full contact period and the specific terms of your contract.
I think the most common one is 20 months on 24 month contracts.
Usually you can find that info specific to your contract in the MTN app, or just call them to ask.
